An Intro To Essential Oils

I am sure most of you have heard of essential oils, but do you know how they are used, or why? There are many people who believe these essential oils are beneficial to health and well-being. These oils are extracted from plants. They are sometimes called volatile oils, ethereal oils, and aetherolea. These concentrated liquids have a strong aroma, the aroma depends on the plant the oil was extracted from.

These oils have the aroma of their plant but they also retain some of the positive properties that the plant has. Read on to find out more about these many essential oils and the benefits you can get from using them.

The List Of Essential Oil

Basil Oil - Basil has been used for hundreds of years in medicine. It has been used to heal everything from snakebites, to respiratory tract issues. It, like many other essential oils, boasts antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial properties, and this oil also has decongestant properties. The aroma can help to alleviate stress and fatigue, and stimulate concentration. Chronic Fatigue and Bronchitis sufferers might want to try this uplifting essential oil.

Bergamot Oil - Bergamot was used to stimulate the digestive system and enhance energy flow. It is an oil that calms stress and anxiety, it magnifies feelings of happiness and confidence, and it has a nice, light citrus scent that is uplifting.

Black Pepper Oil - Black Pepper was once used as currency, that should give you an idea as to how valuable it was considered. This essential oil can help to strengthen your endocrine system and your digestive health. It has those wonderful antibacterial, antiviral, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties and it brings some laxative support to your system as well. The aroma is an energy booster.

Cedarwood Oil - Is said to enhance circulation and cellular oxygen. It is a detoxifier and an antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, or an astringent. Good for acne, congestion, and dandruff.


Cinnamon Bark Oil - The scent of Cinnamon Bark gives energy and can relieve depression and anxiety. It has strong immune-supportive properties and boasts antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and even expectorant activity.

Coriander Oil - Also known as Cilantro Essential Oil - This oil offers digestive support and it can relive inflammation and muscle pain. It can support the body's detoxification process and provides antioxidants to fight free radicals and promote youthful skin.

When Coriander/Cilantro Oil is combined with marjoram, patchouli, bergamot, frankincense, and cypress, you get a liver detoxifying blend. All you need do is mix these oils together with a carrier oil and store it in a glass jar with a lid. Apply it over the liver (that area on the right side of the body right below the ribs.) for a couple weeks. The recipe is: 2 drops Patchouli Essential Oil, 2 drops Bergamot Essential Oil, 3 drops Cilantro/Coriander Essential Oil, 3 drops Frankincense Essential Oil, 4 drops Cypress Essential Oil, 1 Tsp Carrier Oil (like Avocado oil, Borage, Evening Primrose or Rosehip oil.) Shake it before using.

Cypress Oil - This essential oil can relieve muscle pain, promote blood flow, and it has those antibacterial, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and astringent properties found in many essential oils.

Eucalyptus Blue Oil - The fresh and woodsy aroma of Eucalyptus oil is a natural insect repeller. It is a great help when you are down with a cold or a flu. It can be combined with frankincense, myrrh, peppermint, pine, and rosemary Oils to bring to your body expectorant properties and this blend with help to strengthen your immune system. There are also analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-neuralgic, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, and astringent properties found in this essential oil as well.

Fennel Oil - Fennel was used in Egyptian and Roman medicine. These ancient cultures believed Fennel would promote stamina in battles, and they also believed it fortified circulatory, digestive, and respiratory strength. It is an anti-inflammatory, and it has antiseptic properties making it a go to medicine for scratches and bites.

Frankincense Oil - This aroma brings with it empowerment and relief along with antifungal, antiseptic, and astringent properties that benefit the health of your skin, and expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties to help fight off respiratory infections.

An anti-aging ointment recipe I have combines frankincense with carrot seed oil, geranium oil, lemon oil, myrrh, rosehip oil, and rosemary essential oils. The recipe will soothe aging skin and load the layers of your skin with antioxidants to fight the free radicals in your body and will result in helping your skin look younger. Combine 5 drops each of: Frankincense Oil, Geranium Oil, Lemon Oil, Myrrh Oil, Rosemary Oil, with 10 drops of Carrot Seed Oil and Sandalwood Oil...plus 1 cup of Apricot Kernel Oil. Pour in a glass jar with a lid and shake before using. Apply it once a day in the evening before bed.

German Camomile Oil - This oil is used to relieve tension and stress. German Chamomile oil can create a feeling of inner peace and calm.

Ginger Oil - Ginger oil is beneficial to your digestive function, can be rubbed into aching muscles, relieves inflammation and the scent can lift fatigue. It can help with jetlag when mixed with Grapefruit and Juniper Berry Oils.

Goldenrod Oil - Goldenrod is considered a weed but it has many benefits to people with allergies and respiratory problems. It is also called Solidago.

Grapefruit Oil - This oil can flush toxins from the body, cleanse the skin, and up lift your spirits. Grapefruit oil can help to relieve anxiety.

Helichrysum Oil - Helichrysum Oil has properties that can help detoxify your systems. It can rid the liver, the blood, the gallbladder, and the lymph systems of toxins. The scent leaves us feeling secure and stabil. It can be combined with myrrh and your favorite carrier oil to make a natural sunscreen.

Lemon Oil - Another citrus oil, Lemon Essential Oil is another one of my favorites. I find the aroma so uplifting. It's a clean, fresh scent I can't get enough of. It has the properties of a cleanser and a disinfectant and that's why many cleaning products have a lemon base. It energizes and lifts the spirit with it's natural, fresh scent. It also has many antioxidants which help to fight free radicals, it helps to fight the damage free radicals cause to our skin helping us to fight off the signs of aging.

Lemongrass Oil - Lemongrass Oil is a natural pain reliever once used regularly in Chinese medicine. It is also stimulates your circulatory system. The aroma heightens your consciousness and this essential oil has those amazing antibacterial, antiseptic, antioxidant, antiviral, disinfectant, and astringent properties we see in most essential oils. That means Lemongrass Oil can boost the health of your skin and your immune system.

Here's another plus you get from lemongrass oil - it repels bugs! Mix it with some Witch Hazel, Lavender and Eucalyptus to keep those pesky summer bugs at bay. 1/3 cup of Witch Hazel, 1 Teaspoon Lavender Oil, Eucalyptus Oil and Lemongrass Oil. Combine in a glass spray bottle with a lid, and shake well. Shake each time you use it. Just spray it on all your exposed skin. Of course, keep it out of your eyes and your mouth.

Marjoram Oil - Marjoram Oil aroma is known for it's uplifting properties, this scent can relieve stress and anxiety. It can soothe the pain of arthritis by massaging it into the area, it is an antibacterial, and has expectorant properties when used with hot water. Add two drops of the Marjoram Oil to some boiling water, pour the mix into a bowl, put your head near the bowl using a towel to cover your head and the bowl. Breath in the steam deeply to get some relief.

Myrrh Oil - With it's astringent, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antibacterial properties, Myrrh Oil is a great skin toner. It can help your skin to look radiant and healthy. The Myrrh aroma is rather uplifting, so it can alter your mood as well as keep you young looking.
