Lymph Nodes

Updated on October 17, 2012

Lymph Nodes

Lymph nodes are part of the lymphatic system which is a major factor in the body's immune system. The lymphatic system is made up of a network of bean shaped lymph nodes that are connected to vessels.

These lymph nodes act as a filter, removing foreign organisms and abnormal cells. Lymph nodes make a whitish/yellow fluid which contains white blood cells, proteins and some red blood cells.

In the lymph nodes, there are lymphocytes (white blood cells) that go after bacteria and cells that do not belong. The lymph nodes enlarge when they fight an infection since they must produce extra white blood cells. Lymph nodes may also swell as they form an abscess (a closed puss filled pocket) or if they contain cancer cells.

Lymph nodes are present in clusters in the neck, armpits and groin.

Lymph Node Pain

Are your lymph nodes in pain? It could be from a variety of issues.

One of the worst case scenarios is lymphoma or cancer settling in the lymph nodes. However, before you panic, your painful or swollen lymph nodes are more likely the results of something less serious.

The more likely cause of your lymph node pain is either an infection or virus. If that is the case, it can often clean up on its own. The lymph nodes are just doing their job in helping with infection.

If you do have enlarged, painful lymph nodes, the best thing to do is to see your physician. While it may be nothing serious, its best to get a professional opinion.
