Manifesting Your Reality (The Practical use of the Law of Attraction)
In the last few years there has been an abundance of books and DVD's on the subject of the Law of Attraction. For those unfamiliar with this subject, the Law of Attraction is an ancient Universal Law as natural as the Law of Gravity, which means that whatever we think, say and do has an automatic response from the Universe. Like a boomerang, whatever we send out in thought, word or deed must come back to us.
Now, this is a massive subject, but what I have attempted to do in this article is to present the reader with some of the best techniques and formulas that I have learned over the years, in order to attain the intentions that you set forth in your life.
Under the Law of Attraction, the response from the Universe is in direct proportion to what we send out, either good, bad or indifferent. The Law of Attraction applies not only in response to our actions, but in response to our words and even our thoughts. We magnetically attract to ourselves all that we are sending out into the world around us.
There is evidence that Jesus Christ taught this law, such as in the following statement, "As a man thinks, so is he." In the Gospel of John, 5:14 Jesus has healed a man of an affliction and finding him later at the temple, he said to the man "Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee." It is clear that he correlated that what comes upon us, good or bad, is related to our thinking, speaking and doing.
Jesus also said, "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." As far as the Universe is concerned, our thoughts, words and deeds, are the asking, whether this asking is beneficial or detrimental to us. If we get something bad in our life, we may literally be asking for it due to the accumulation of negative thinking, speaking and action.
There is quite a large amount of evidence that spiritual teachers such as Jesus of Nazareth and Gautama Buddha believed in and understood the Law of Attraction. However, the Law of Attraction is a Universal Law and does not necessitate any kind of religious belief for it to operate in your life. It is as natural as being born, living and dying, as natural as the cycles of spring, summer, autumn and winter. It operates regardless of what you believe or do not believe. The only important criteria is the content of your thoughts, words and deeds.
Self Image & Core Beliefs
Under the Law of Attraction, whatever we believe about ourselves is true for us. That does not mean what someone else believes about you or anything else to do with you. It is what you believe about yourself that counts. The Law of Attraction only recognises the energy which you put into something that determines what is truth for you.
So, a negative self-image acts as a retardant to any success that you might privately and secretly hope for. A positive self-image, on the other hand will work for you. Therefore, in order to begin towards achieving anything ~ that means literally anything you can think of ~ you must start with how you perceive yourself. This is the number one principal for manifesting the reality which you would like to see in your life.
If your upbringing, school life or relationships with others have given you a poor self-image then this is what you must first start to change. If you continually feed your brain with negative thoughts such as "I'm not good enough" "Not clever enough" "Not attractive enough" "People always let me down" "I can never get a break" etc, then this is the belief system which you are creating in your own mind about yourself. You can only attract what you put out, so therefore, more negativity reflecting these mental statements must come into your life to prove the 'truth' of these statements.
You see, the Law of Attraction must be true to your own beliefs. Like a jeanie from the bottle, it is "your wish is my command" even when you don't actually want it! It is the asking, which Jesus mentions above. The Law of Attraction has no particular agenda for you, whether good, bad or indifferent; it only acts according to your core beliefs about yourself. It is a law of correspondences, meaning that it can only ever act according to the energy that you put out into the world around you, composed of actions, words and thought vibrations. We each have a personal responsibility for those core beliefs, composed of thoughts, words and actions.
The Brain Connection
Once we start to change the way we think about ourselves, magical transformations begin to take place. Some of the reasons behind this may even be linked with physiological processes, such as those found in the brain. This is especially so in the parts of the brain known as the hypothalamus and the amygdala; this is the 'emotional brain' and what we feed into these areas by thoughts and emotions has a massive effect on how we perceive reality and our life. The health of the hypothalamic and amygdala response can mean the difference between success and failure, happiness and misery.
These parts of the brain are involved in the ancient fight, fright, flight response. Millions of people are walking around with their amygdala and hypothalamus in a constant background state of this syndrome, and it's so common that it feels normal to them. But it isn't, it's abnormal, and it creates havoc in every area of your life.
In order to truly 'manifest your reality' as suggested in the title of this article, it is vital to start by being grateful for what you do have in your life. There is always something to be grateful for, even if it is just a 'small blessing.'
One of the best methods for developing a grateful heart is to practice it every day for 30 days consistently. Some teachers suggest 21 days, but I like 30 days so that we can be sure of a definite change in the way we use the brain.
You start the day by waking up, and mentally or verbally stating at least 3 things that you are grateful for. You really try to feel this gratitude at the same time. Then again, before bed, you name 3 more things that you are deeply grateful for before going to sleep. This is done every day twice per day upon waking and retiring, for 30 days consecutively.
The things that you are grateful for can be almost anything; try to vary them, but they can range from the people or animals you love, to your home, to work or some hobby that you like. Simple things such as the sun shining, or the birds singing can work too. If you hate your job, for example, try to find something connected with it that makes you feel grateful even if it's just the money you earn. Be inventive with this. Look for the good thing, even if it's only one good thing, that may not be immediately obvious to you.
This gratitude practice 're-sets' the hypothalamic/amygdala response, and basically re-trains your brain. It actually helps you to break the bad habit of looking on the gloomy side and finding the negative behind things that happen in your life. It creates a new habit of positive thinking. The Law of Attraction then shifts emphasis, and you will find that more good things come your way, as you begin to develop an expectation of good things. Remember that the Law of Attraction must be true to what you believe about yourself and your life experiences.
Once you have done this practice for 30 days, keep it going regularly. Find something every single day to appreciate and be grateful for. Under the Law of Attraction, the response is such that you must start to attract even more things to be grateful for, because what you believe you must receive. Let's hear that one again:
What you Believe, you must Receive
Act as if you Have it Now
One thing for sure that will accelerate your positive use of the Law of Attraction is to act as if the thing that you want is already yours. This single practice will work wonders in your life, if you focus on it regularly.
If you don't know yet what you want, then make a list of what you do not want. Once you have made this list, covering areas such as work, home life, relationships, or even health, you will gain great clarity concerning what it actually is that you do want. This will help you to set some real goals for changes in your life. I always say that if you know what you don't want, then you are already halfway to knowing what you do want!
To understand this better, allow me give you an example from my own life; I meditate regularly and I always spend several minutes of my meditation visualising what I want to manifest in my life. I see it, I hear any sounds connected with it, I touch it, taste it, smell it, all in my mind. I make it as real in my mind first, as if I already have that thing and am there with it, experiencing it.
As an example, I now write full time, and I achieved this by visualisation. Before I even had my first book in print, I would hold a book that I liked and admired, and cover the author's name and imagine my own name there on the book cover. I would completely feel the reality of this achievement. I did this for several years until one day, I sent a manuscript off to a publisher on the subject of meditation; to my surprise and delight, the publisher wanted to publish the book and said that when my manuscript landed on her desk, she had been thinking that she would like to publish a book on meditation! Everything was in alignment with my thought.
In my mind, I was already acting as if I was already there as an author. I not only actually did a lot of practical writing, but I visualised myself writing, I saw the publication of my work and I saw myself becoming a full-time author. All in my mind first. When asked what I do by others, even if it wasn't quite there yet, I would answer that I'm a writer. We must play the part if we want it to become an actuality.
So, the combination of my thoughts, the positive feelings that I had around success in writing, and the thought of the publisher were all in alignment, because the Law of Attraction was at work supplying the detail for these combined energies to coalesce and produce a result; that result was my first published book. I didn't have to work the detail out, as that was the job of the Law of Attraction, which has a natural way of aligning things that are in harmony with one another. All I needed to do was focus on my intention.
When we hold out the intention of what we want, with positive thoughts and emotions and no doubts, we can achieve what seems impossible at the time. In a real sense, this is faith. Faith in the power of thought, and the knowledge that there is a universal law in operation that, like the jeanie of the lamp, will obey our command.
When you work in this way, you will attract the right circumstances, the right people and the right contacts in inexplicable and sometimes miraculous ways. Oil and water cannot mix; anything that no longer resonates on the same vibration as you, will, like oil and water, separate away from you. As you change from within, so must your outer experiences change.
Ask, and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall be opened to you.
Focus Only on the Goal
Another very important aspect in understanding how the Law of Attraction works, is that it is much simpler than many people realise. The only task that you have to fulfill is to stay focussed on the goal that you have in mind, whatever that may be. That's all that you have to do. The Conscious Universe works out the details for you.
In other words, when you have a goal in mind, as I did with my writing in the example above, all that you need to do is to remain focussed on the intention of what you want. Obviously, as in my own case, you will do all the practical things that are necessary in order to get closer to attaining your goal. In my case, that entailed actually writing regularly and sending off manuscripts to prospective publishers and agents. You must be pro-active in order to achieve your goals. If you do nothing, then under the Law of Attraction, nothing is exactly what you can expect in return!
But do not fret over the details of how, when and where the thing that you want must come. The whys and the wherefores are not your concern or your job. The Universal Law of Attraction takes care of all those details, of how when and where the connections will enter into the picture to help you attain your goal.
Your one and only task is to focus every day on what you want, doing all that is practical in between, and getting your brain and consciousness aligned with your goals in meditation and introspection, being grateful, and acting as if you already have what you want now. The Law of Attraction is magnetic, and will supply the rest, because the vibration that you put out in thought, word and action will have a magnifying and magnetic effect which attracts vibrations of a similar order into the field of your consciousness and personal experience.
Too many people fail in their efforts to attain their goals because they get caught up in the whys and wherefores, trying to see how it could be possible for them to succeed and only coming up with hundreds of reasons why they must fail. It is better by far, never to even think about the how, when and where you will get what you want, because you will never fully understand the intricate workings of the Universe. "God works in mysterious ways" it has been wisely said.
We do not know what is best for us; but if we have a good idea what we would like to do with our life, then once we apply ourselves to that task, as outlined in this article, the magic begins to happen. The jeanie in the bottle is released and begins to act for us. But the thing that we desire will nearly always come in ways that have not been expected or predicted. The Universe (God) knows best.
Imagination and Reality
Even with a basic understanding of the emotional parts of the brain, i.e., the amygdala and the hypothalamus, it is vital to understand that in these fight, fright, flight responses which take place in the brain, the Universal Intelligence makes no distinction between what is imagined or what is actually taking place.
Numerous studies have been conducted on the brain waves of test subjects to demonstrate how our thoughts affect us and it is well established that imaginary fears and phobias can cause physical reactions in the physical body. We all know how we can blush if we think of something embarrassing that happened to us in the past, or mentally squirm at a past memory of being humiliated in some way. We can become angry by just thinking about someone who was rude to us, and sexually aroused by a mere suggestive thought.
All of these mental/emotional reactions taking place in the amygdala and hypothalamus, both pleasurable and unpleasant, affect the chemistry of the body. It does not even matter if there is not any actual physical stimuli, because these very thoughts and emotions create these chemical changes which take place in the body.
The brain does not know the difference between a sexual fantasy and an actual sexual encounter, or a panic attack and actually running away from a dangerous animal. Nor does it know the difference between an imagined success and an actual physical experience of success. The Universal Intelligence acts in exactly the same way; it does not recognise any difference in imagination or so-called physical actuality.
This is good news for us concerning the Law of Attraction. It means that we have, in our brains, in our minds and emotions, the key for changing our lives and transforming it into what we want. The Law of Attraction must respond.
Meditation and Visualisation
Finally, I advise anyone who wants to change their life in some way for the better, or to attain some goal or ambition, to spend time every day in meditation. There are countless types of meditation to pursue, and I have several here on my profile if you would like to experiment.
I suggest that you make time for meditation and visualisation for at least 15 minutes every day. Just find a quiet space where you will not be disturbed, and take a few deep breaths in through the nostrils and out through the nostrils for a couple of minutes. Now visualise yourself in your ideal situation, job, career, relationship, location, etc., don't flit from subject to subject, just stay with one theme only, for the duration of the meditation. If career seems more important, stick with that for the time allocated.
Put as much visual imagination into your goal as you like. Using all the five senses in our imagination brings these visualisations to life. So, what would your ideal success look like? What might it sound like? What might it feel like, to touch? Would there be any smells associated with it, or taste? You may use some or all of the imaginary five senses, but the point is to make the visualisation as realistic to your brain as possible. Remember that the brain and the Law of Attraction do not distinguish from physical reality and imagination.
When you perform these practices, you will see constant synchronicities at work. Carl Jung coined this word, synchronicity to explain what seems on the surface to be coincidence. When we have been thinking about a certain thing and it shows up in our life in some inexplicable way it is synchronicity. But it is not coincidence; it is something deeper. It is the synchronistic power of your mind and words and deeds which are aligned with the Law of Attraction. Watch out for so-called coincidences, which are really synchronicity at work, proving that what you are doing is working for you.
You find that things align for you, and each experience acts like a stepping-stone leading you to the next step and the next. The right people to help you will show up out of the blue, as it were, the right opportunity in work comes along, the right location, the right partner, the right career, and so on.
If you follow these guidelines and are pro-active in your goals and dreams, the Law of Attraction will be set to work for you.
