Cincinnati based company, Medella Laboratories, to launch All-Natural, DEET Free Insect & Mosquito Repellent

Updated on May 6, 2016

For months the CDC has been warning Americans about the threat posed by the Zika virus. This includes issuing travel guidance, taking enhanced precautions and outlining guidelines for pregnant women which included postponing travel to certain parts of South America. Other governments and health agencies have taken their warnings even further by advising women to postpone pregnancy, if possible, until more is known about Zika risks, precautions and treatment options.

The CDC reports the species of mosquito responsible for carrying the Zika virus has in past years reached as far north and west as New York, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, and Kansas City in addition to all of the Southeast and Texas. This news continues to dominate headlines and put Americans on high alert. It has also created increased demand for products that repel mosquitoes. Latin American mosquito repellent sales are up 10 times vs. a year ago, while U.S. sales have already doubled prior to the mosquito season even starting.

The problem facing many consumers, especially pregnant women and young children, is that most insect and mosquito repellents contain DEET, a popular chemical that repels insects. Many consumers fear that use or over-use of DEET based products could lead to negative health issues. Sharing this concern, many OB/GYNs and Pediatricians recommend that pregnant women and children refrain from using DEET products. This begs the question…How do they protect themselves from insect and mosquito bites?

Mason, OH based Medella Laboratories has responded to consumer demand by launching an All-Natural, DEET free Insect & Mosquito Repellent under its Medella Naturals™ brand name of products. Medella Labs specializes in providing all-natural health and wellness solutions for the entire family. “Seeing the increased demand for insect repellent, but limited DEET free, all-natural options, we as a company felt a sense of responsibility to create an affordable, all-natural solution for consumers”, said Medella President & CEO Michael Ewers. Ewers, who spent 11 years in sales management at Procter & Gamble founded Medella Laboratories with the idea of offering “On-Trend” all- natural health and wellness products for today’s consumer. “There are so many opportunities to offer high quality products to consumers, but bigger companies fail to operate with the speed and flexibility necessary to react to opportunities in the marketplace. Therefore, opportunities are missed all the time. At Medella we pride ourselves on being versatile and working with the expediency that allows us to respond to market or consumer demand, without sacrificing quality”, Ewers added.

Medella first launched into the consumer healthcare space in early 2015, bringing to market a portfolio of Non-GMO and gluten free probiotics and other all-natural supplement options for the entire family. Ewers says he expects “Medella’s rapid growth to continue based on the company’s ability to expand into growing product categories.” Medella Laboratories’ products are currently found in four different countries, with expansion plans to exceed 15 countries by the end of 2017.

Medella Naturals™ Insect & Mosquito Repellent is available at various local, regional and national retailers. The company is planning a major marketing push behind the repellent, which they are branding LIVE DEET FREE. We have been fortunate to receive a great deal of advocacy from healthcare professionals and we plan to leverage this support to drive awareness and educate consumers on the benefits of DEET free options”, Ewers said. “All-natural products are great, but they have to work or they fail to meet the most important need of the consumer. Our Medella brand repellent has been tested on two continents with great reviews, oh yeah…and it smells great too!”
