I would first like to draw your attention to one of the most prevalent problems of a society, affecting millions of people worldwide. The problem is obesity, which can be defined in many ways. In general, I would define obesity as a real mess in a society. Obesity simply means you are overweight and your body has excess fat accumulations. Please note that a certain amount of body fat is necessary to keep all your vital body organs work in normal way. This fat helps the organs to store energy, shock absorption, heat insulation, etc. However, when fat accumulates beyond a certain amount, it gives rise to a condition named obesity.

Some people define obesity in terms of Body Mass Index ratio, which is calculated by dividing a person's weight in Kilograms to the height in meters square. As per the studies conducted on Body Mass Index ratio or BMI, a person having a BMI in the range of 25-30 is considered overweight. At the same time, a person whose BMI is more than 30 is called an obese. Please find below various causes of obesity:

  • family history

  • low self esteem and awareness

If we talk about United States, then the figures say that the problem of obesity has, in fact reached to the levels of epidemic proportions. It is calculated that over two thirds of adults in the US are overweight or obese. The figures in children are even worse as 20%- 30% children in the US are either overweight or obese.

The problem of obesity has been growing rapidly across the globe which nearly doubled from 1998 to 2005. The factors related to obesity are many, but I will talk about some factors which are manmade and so, can be minimized in order to deal with the problem. The first factor that comes right away is unhealthy and busy lifestyle, which has been adopted by millions of people, and so gives rise to such unwanted weight related problems. The second factor is unhealthy food (like junk food). People are now becoming dependent on unhealthy diets which include foods like pizza, burger and foods containing high cholesterol (foods containing saturated fatty acids) harmful to heart.

The problem of obesity, as I discussed above, is the root cause of many other diseases associated with it, which include hypertension, heart attack, stroke and many such serious conditions. These are very serious ailments and should not be neglected in any way. I have summed up various risks and complications associated to obesity:

  • risk of heart diseases
  • hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • diabetes
  • breathing problems
  • issues like depression, anxiety

As far as issues like weight gain and accumulation of excess fat in the body is concerned, it happens gradually with time and does not happen overnight. So, the best way to deal with it is to be more focused about your diet and the lifestyle you live. I understand that people with busy schedule don't get much time and are quite reluctant to go to fitness centers to remain fit, but they can certainly keep a check in their diet and try to avoid too much oily food, as it contains saturated fatty acids, harmful for your heart, and other vital organs.
