Weight Loss: Don't Even Tell People You're On A Diet

Updated on June 30, 2015

Weight Loss

Getting rid of bad food isn't like getting rid of the booze, or a no-good husband. It's not like you make a declaration one day and no longer put food in your mouth. You've still got to eat. It's just time to do it with some sort of a plan. But that doesn't mean everyone has to know about it. No one really has to know what you're doing.

You just won't add all of the butter and mayo that you used to when you weren't thinking about yourself. You'll eat smaller portions and fill up on fruits and vegetables. You'll take the stairs when you can, and run around with the kids every chance you get.

You'll start to notice small positive steps because you're changing the way you do things. Some of these things might be noticeable to others, but you can make it about living healthy, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's just more manageable than going on a restricting diet and starving.

There's something about announcing you're dieting. All of a sudden you have to behave yourself. This is either because someone is watching your every move, or you're really hard on yourself.

If you don't tell everyone that you're starting a new nutrition program or weight loss endeavor then you're not accountable. I know, then you're not even accountable to yourself, right? Okay that's sounds true. But, you can decide for yourself what you want to do and start doing it without making a big deal about it. You can then say that you're trying to make better decisions. This is true you know. So, why not do it this way?

You really don't have to do anything. That's right, you heard me. Nothing. What this type of thinking does is that it allows you to be in charge in every situation. You can make a good choice for lunch for example. You can have grilled chicken on a salad instead of a greasy burger. Or, if you have to have the burger, try a veggie burger or turkey burger. If you're dying for a BLT, try using fifty percent less fat bacon bits for the bacon flavor instead of real bacon. There are ways around the calorie problem. Even through you don't have to do these things, you'll start to want to because these little changes will end up making a difference over time. The big thing is that you're not locked in.

You don't have to worry about someone watching your every move. Watching every bite. That's too much pressure. The point is that everyone will notice what you've been doing when you're successful. They praise you. Then they'll know why you're not having a smore at the next BBQ, and they'll be happy for you. You'll be in complete control.

While you're going along on your quite little journey you'll keep making good choices like drinking lots of water and iced tea instead of going for a bad snack. It will become easier to cut back of certain things too. A big problem in a lot of people's diets is salad dressings. You can ruin your whole lunch from a caloric standpoint with too much dressing on your salad. A quick and easy trick is to dip your fork in the dressing and then pick up some salad. Then you get the taste in every bite without all of the calories.

But, it's not all about what you can't have. Actually, when you're trying to lose weight you've got to eat more often to keep the metabolism functioning at a top rate. So hopefully you'll spend time preparing meals and little snacks to have on hand at a moment's notice. It's like stoking a fire. To lose you've got to eat three protein rich meals a day along with at least two healthy snacks. It sound like a lot, but you won't be eating bon bons and other things with empty calories.

There is something special about doing this on your own. You learn to take care of yourself in a way that you never have before. It's about the thinking and planning for a good life. It's about the confidence you gain from putting your mind to something that's important to you. Something that's for you alone.

If you're the person who has to live in an overweight body, and feel all of the shame and discontent that goes along with that, then turn that around. Think about what will really make you happy and do it on your own.
