Music: A Tool In Overcoming Obstacles
Listening Your Way Through Anxiety
Music is a very powerful tool. Listening to music is both relaxing and stimulating. When dealing with anxiety, hearing both lyrics and sounds can help one feel better about themselves and the world they live in. However, not all music is relaxing and each individual has their own preferences when it comes to what they listen to.
The first great thing about music is that is can snap you out of depression. Music stimulates the mind and helps motivate you. Since practicing and exercising is key to getting through anxiety, listening to music is a great way to get out of bed and get moving! Another advantage to music is that it can make you feel like you can do anything (which you can if you work hard enough). Music that sends a positive message can be very uplifting and should be considered when looking for ways to conquer your fears.
As a fellow sufferer from anxiety, I have found some specific songs very helpful. There are some artists that I find are amazing at giving me the knowledge that I can, with hard work, overcome my anxiety. One of these artists is Jewel. Jewel has written songs such as: “Life Uncommon”, “Hands”, “Good Day”, and “Fading”. “Life Uncommon”, “Hands”, and “Good Day” are three songs that talk about being able to overcome obstacles no matter who you are. These songs also illustrate that in order to beat the things that get in the way of success, you have to put in some effort of your own. The song “Fading” is actually a song that Jewel wrote about a panic attack and while the song may not exactly be very positive in meaning, it shows that we are not alone in our struggles. Jewel also sings the song, “Down So Long”, showing that eventually you will overcome your biggest struggles.
Another great song is “Beautiful” by Carol King. This song touches on the importance of staying positive and that if you have a good outlook on life, others will see you as beautiful. Additionally, if looking for another song that will reaffirm the knowledge that you are not alone in your struggles, “I’ll Stand by You” by The Pretenders is a great choice. “Bad Day” by Daniel Powter speaks to the fact that we all have days that are difficult.
A song I found that helped me stay motivated was “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child. The song reminds us not to give up and I tried to think of it as a song reminding me not to let anxiety get the best of me.
There are many other songs that are extremely inspirational when it comes to dealing with something that is difficult to get through. While some of the songs I listed may not exactly be recent, they still convey the message of hope. Listening to music is a fantastic way to distract the mind from our worries and problems. Since we are the ones who choose to listen to music, we are teaching ourselves to find ways to help ourselves. Just as we pick the small steps to practice each day in order to overcome our fears, we are picking the songs that we feel will help us. I may be recommending these songs and recommending listening to uplifting music, but you are the one who chooses whether or not to do so.
I suggest that everyone search for positive songs that they feel will help them stay motivated and on the path to success. Look for songs that remind you that with hard work, you can challenge your fears and other daily obstacles. I have provided a list of songs that have helped (and still help) me get through my anxiety. Feel free to listen to the songs I have recommended or find other songs that will help you become stronger when dealing with whatever struggles you face. Also, writing your own poems or songs is an excellent way to boost your confidence!
