Music to Help You Feel Less Alone
Mental Health is a serious issue that effects young and old people alike. Music is so powerful; it can heal, it can empower, and the right song is 'food for the soul'. Finding a song that describes what you are going through, or helps you understand what you are feeling is so powerful and can help you feel that you are not alone. In my research and experience with mental health issues, I know how much music can make a difference in someone's life. Here are a list of songs that can help you feel that you are not alone!
1. Anxiety - Julia Michaels ft. Selena Gomez
But all my friends, they don't know what it's like, what it's like
They don't understand why I can't sleep through the night
I've been told that I could take something to fix it
Damn, I wish it, I wish it was that simple, ah
'Anxiety' by Julia Michaels and Selena Gomez is a song about what its like to live with a mental health issue. It talks about the people around you not understanding the effect mental health issues can take on you. This song makes you realise that there are other people out there that have the same struggles as you and that you are not alone! I adore this song.
2. You Will Be Found - Dear Evan Hansen
Have you ever felt like nobody was there?
Have you ever felt forgotten in the middle of nowhere?
Have you ever felt like you could disappear?
Like you could fall, and no one would hear?Well, let that lonely feeling wash away
Maybe there's a reason to believe you'll be okay
'Cause when you don't feel strong enough to stand
You can reach, reach out your hand
'You Will Be Found' is a song from the hit Broadway musical 'Dear Evan Hansen'. The music from DEH helped me through a hard time and gave me so much hope that things would be okay! This song describes someone feeling so low that they will never be okay again. But it tells people that you will be found! Which is such an important message! This song and the others on the album are so inspiring and beautiful. The music is so relatable and I feel it on a personal level.
3. Rainbow - Kacey musgraves
If you could see what I see, you'd be blinded by the colours
Yellow, red and orange and green, and at least a million others
So tie up the bow, take off your coat and take a look around'
Cause the sky is finally open, the rain and wind stopped blown'
But you're stuck out in the same old storm again
You hold tight to your umbrella, well, darlin' I'm just tryin' to tell ya
That there's always been a rainbow hangin' over your head
Rainbow by Kacey Musgraves is such a beautiful song. The song has such a beautiful message that 'you are beautiful!' and that you are more special than you know. It is a soothing, calming song with such a powerful meaning. This song is perfect for days when you need a self esteem booster.
4. Zero Gravity - Kate Miller-Heidke
I've been aching
Feeling low
You're so heavy
I have got to let you go
I'm going where there's zero Gravity
I absolutely adore this song by Kate Miller-Heidke. She wrote this song about post-natal depression, but it can be applied to any mental health disorder. Its about letting go, and freeing yourself from the thoughts or people that are keeping you down. It is such a fun song, and it is such a mood booster. This song inspires me to have fun and break free from negativity.
5. In My Blood - Shawn Mendes
Help me, it's like the walls are caving in
Sometimes I feel like giving up
But I just can't
It isn't in my blood
In My Blood is such a fantastic song about Shawn's experience with anxiety. This song not only describes the feelings, and thoughts associated with anxiety and panic disorders, but gives a strong message to not give up! This song shows that so many people are going through trials similar to the ones you are, and that no one is alone!
6. Let It Go - Frozen
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in, heaven knows I've tried
Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well, now they know
Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
I know that 'Let It Go' is from an overplayed Disney movie. BUT! The lyrics are so strong and powerful! It describes the effects of anxiety and tells people to Let it Go! It is fantastic, and should be a mental health anthem. Belting this song out in your bedroom can make you feel so much better.
7. So Small - Carrie Underwood
It's okay to open up
Go ahead and let the light shine through
I know it's hard on a rainy day
You wanna shut the world out and just be left alone
But don't run out on your faith
'Cause sometimes that mountain you've been climbing
Is just a grain of sand
And what you've been out there searching for forever
Is in your hands
This song puts everything into perspective. When I am struggling with the thoughts inside my head, being reminded that there is a beautiful world out there and that I am loved makes a world of difference. This song is a reminder that we are small, and there are so many things outside that we can look at to help us escape our thoughts.
8. Skyscraper - Demi Lovato
You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I'm made of glass
Like I'm made of paper
Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper
The lyrics in this song are so powerful. It helps inspire me to keep going, even when its hard. The song gives strength to those who need it, and encourages people not to let bullies, or things that are causing damage get you down.
