My Healing Experience at Nature Coast Rehabilitation (2014)

Updated on September 10, 2015

The Second Part of My Healing Journey

After breaking my leg on February 11th, and having the best surgeon in Florida, Dr. Cole at Florida Hospital in Orlando Florida; who expressed on April 30th, I needed physical therapy rehabilitation to learn to walk again.

Healing Journey

Bruce a physical therapist whose judgment I trusted recommended Nature Coast Rehabilitation in Williston Florida. Since my driving ability at this point was questionable, my sister Paula drove me to where I should go for therapy. I felt better knowing I should walk again soon.

Sometimes Friends Mean Well

A few of my well-meaning friends said therapy did not help their issue’s years ago because each one was put on machines and monitored with little personal contact.

Negativity is alien to me and my thinking process, so I listened politely and tuned them out.

Great Customer Service

I called Nature Coast and made my first appointment on May 6th for my evaluation. I had no idea what to expect, but I knew if I felt going to this place was not in my best interest there were other places to go.

When my sister Paula and I walked into Nature Coast Rehabilitation we were greeted by Juanita the Office Manager. I liked her right away because she smiled. Customers do not always receive a smile when entering a business these days. This is my greatest pet peeves---poor customer service. However, I received the best of customer service as I filled out the necessary papers.

I listened to Juanita as she helped another customer by answering his questions in a calm professional manner. I know from years of dealing in customer service with the public many challenges arise daily, especially when a customer is irritated. Juanita and Doris the Financial Director, represent this company in a supreme manner. I enjoyed talking to both of these ladies; and as it happened we knew some of the same people. These ladies are a great asset to this business.

Heather a Physical Therapist Assistant

When the time came for my appointment a young physical therapist assistant name Heather accompanied me to a room for my evaluation.

I admit I was a little apprehensive about someone as young as Heather being able to do anything for me. (Boy! I was wrong.) Then in a few minutes a man walked in and introduced himself as Andy. Heather had previously said the Physical Therapist should be in soon.

Both My Legs Needed TLC (Tender Loving Care)

Because I was not allowed to put more than 20% weight on my broken leg that had a plate and two screws in it--- my wheelchair was mainly my mode of transportation---from my bed to the bathroom and kitchen; my world had grown smaller, the carpet was too thick for my wheelchair in the dining room and living room.

To use my walker I hopped using my left foot and lightly balanced myself with the toes of my right foot. Therefore, when I came for my first appointment I was weak and had started putting more weight on my broken leg.

My left leg hurt from all it had suffered from February through May and my broken leg stayed swollen. And, my ankle was still bruised and sore because it was badly twisted when I fell. I had a list I brought with me to tell the Physical Therapist about all my issues.

To say I did not feel well enough to be there would be an understatement. However, when I feel my worst---I smile more as I do not want to rain on---someone else’s happy day.

My Healing Journey Began

The moment came when I collected my thoughts and came to the conclusion I was a super lucky woman. I had a brilliant surgeon and now I had a superb physical therapist. Yes, someone up there loved me.

In the days and appointments that followed I was amazed at how fast I was improving. Andy gave me instructions on what to do at home and I followed them to the letter.

I was convinced Andy was a superhuman being because while; he is working on someone he is able to instruct the physical therapist assistants when needed. He takes note of everyone in the room and is aware how each client is responding to their treatment. And, he never forgets what is told to, him about a previous issue weeks before.

My visits lasted from one hour to an hour and a half and I was being treated by Andy, Heather, Paul and Austin on various treatments from hands-on treatments such as massaging my legs, feet and ankles, balance, strength, stretching, range of motion and walking with a cane.

Happy Days!

My first appointment was May 6th at Nature Coast Rehabilitation and I had nine treatments before I returned to Dr. Cole’s office on June 11th for what became my last appointment with him.

I walked across the room for him and he was all smiles as he could not believe I was walking. I was ecstatic and I told him what a great physical therapist I had and he agreed and said I did not need to return unless I had an issue; then call him right away.

Amazing How Physical Therapy Can Heal

I returned to finish my last nine treatments because initially Dr. Cole had prescribed 18 treatments. My family was amazed I was walking after nine treatments. My sister was surprised when I drove to rehab after a few weeks.

And, now I am walking. I balance with my cane outside my home---but inside the house I take my time--- doing everything in slow motion, which is alien to hyper me. Andy demonstrated the exercises for me to continue at home for a complete recovery that I know will take a while longer.

Thanks From My Heart

I shall be eternally thankful for my surgeon Dr. J. Dean Cole of Orlando Florida and my physical therapist Andy Brice of Williston Florida.

And, I sincerely hope anyone who suffers from pain for any reason asks their doctors to prescribe treatments at Nature Coast Rehabilitation in Williston or Chiefland Florida to feel well again. Life is too short to live with pain.

Thank You All---Andy, Paul, Austin, Heather, Juanita and Doris.

    Hi suzettenaples,

Thanks for your visit and comment---it is nice to hear from you. These people were the greatest. I went there with the help of my sister and a walker on the initial visit. And, now I can walk with a cane outside in the yard and to shopping. It feels so great to move around now.

I wish you the very best and have a great new week.

Nothing wrong with slow motion! LOL! We can enjoy life much more sometimes. I am glad you had such a positive attitude and this is such a wonderful tribute to those that helped in your recovery. Attitude is everything and especially so when recovering from an injury such as yours. Thanks for bringing this physical therapy group to our attention. Voted up+ and shared.

    Hi DealForALiving,

So nice to meet you, and I appreciate your visit and reading my hub. Life is full is surprises because I thought it would take months before I would walk again. After nine visits I could walk to the surprise of my doctor---who was wonderful. Life is so wonderful again because I can walk and do for others, because I believe in paying back gifts of love that was given to me when I needed them.

Have a great weekend, and I am happy you are here on HubPages.

Thanks for visiting and reading my hub. I am sorry about your cousin and I hope he is well now and more careful. I have learned to slow down, even in my walking. I have always been hyper and tried to do anything in one day---but no more.

I hope all is well in India and have a wonderful weekend.

It is only during the illness that we value and remember the days when we were healthy.

In your case it was an accident and I am glad you have recovered. But be careful, a cousin of mine broke his same leg again and refused to undergo the same process again. Then he relented after great persuasion.

What a positive story and outcome - the combination of your surgeon and Nature Coast was all worthwhile .- Oh yes, add to that your great attitude, always a help but sometimes difficult to sustain. Best wishes for the future -

That's amazing Bobbi, I am so glad your physio worked out for you, yes when you receive a smile and the best treatment it goes a long way to making you feel so much better and quickly. I was intrigued by the leg support, that someone said looked like a tattoo, I have never seen that before, keep well, and take it easy, no 30 mile marathons for you just yet! lol!

    Hi Bobbi Purvis!

Great to learn that you have recovered from your pain. It is such a nice gesture to thank those who have helped you in your moments of pain and discomfort. Surely they are Angels with a healing touch. Howsoever medically trained a person may be, they need to have kindness and compassion for their patients to relieve them from pain and other sufferings.

A medical personnel needs to be caring and loving. If he or she does not possess any of these qualities then let him or her forget about the profession. You can not be cruel and be called a medical doctor/therapist. Thanks for sharing your experience and I wish you a happy stay.

Awesome news Bobbi! I'm so glad to hear that your physical therapy was a success and that you are up and about. After 9 treatments too!! You are a strong woman, but we already knew that. I never saw leg tape before...even though it does look like a tattoo, it's an amazing invention. Keep up the great work :)
