My obveration of computer addiction

Updated on January 5, 2015

Many people love computer games, they play computer games/ video games for entertainment, it helps people to relax and forget about their stress. In this essay, I will share my observation from my old friends in high school who I believe that they were addicted to computer games.

Computer is not listed in DSM V, but according to my observation from those people I knew, I discovered a few common behavioural patterns between them.

Dismiss their responsibility in order to play games

I found that people who are over obsessed toward computer games often dismiss their reasonability, they spent all of their time to game, they did not do homework, they did not study, and might not able to commit their promises, and the only thing they can focus is the process of their game.

Compulsively play game even they are tired, poor time management

People with game’s problem spend a lot of time on their computer games, they normally spend over 12 hours to the whole day, and they don’t care if they are tired. And they also have poor time management skills; because they spent most of their time on gaming without knowing how much time it had been pissed. The slept very late for gaming, even the next day was the school day, so it was quite often that students are late to school because students were not able to wake up in the morning, sometimes they ditch school because they were too tired.

Neglect their needs

I discovered that many people will neglect their needs because they need to catch up their game, they do not care if they are starving, and they play games constantly for hours without noticing they are tired.

Get angry when they lose

When they lose, they feel angry and being verbally aggressive (I have heard that sometimes it will be physical), they swear at their teammates, calling names, and insulting others. I personally believe that they were taking their games too seriously. For them, game is not ‘just a game’, it is part of their life, it affects them emotionally.

I had experiment of playing first person shooting game, I discovered that my heartbeats increased during the game, and I also experienced high level of stress and anxiety when I turn on the music, I quit the in a few minutes letter, I believe it would affect on my emotion if I play this game every day.

Chasing

There are a symptom called chasing in gambling addiction, which means if a person wins money from gambling, they will take more risk in order to win more money, if they lose, they will try to chase back the money by spending more money to gamble. Many people broke because of that.

As a player of “World of Tanks”, I feel good when I win the battle, I normally will move on to next battle, but if I lose, I normally will try again in next battle.

So I wonder, what if this behaviour go extreme, it might became pathological if I am not able to control myself; I might spend a lot of time to play this game, and I might use real money to buy virtual tanks and ammos.

Guilt

I believe that people who spend a lot of time on computer realise that they have a problem; they feel guilty after they screw up something in their life. They feel frustration or angry when their family mention about it. But they will continue to play their games.

Gender differences

I found that

- Teenage male are more likely to be addicted to computer games than teenage female

-male are more likely to display aggressiveness while playing computer games.

- Male are more likely to play violence games than female

But I do not have any scientific method to support me, and my samples are rather limited, so my idea might be bonded by gender stereotype and non objective opinion.

Background

People with gaming problem tend to have lack of commutation with their family, emotional problem, lack of discipline and responsibility, and life without meaning.

Lack of commutation with their family

Those teenagers have a family that love them, but their parents have lack of interaction and communication with their children, even they are communicating, their parents are being so judgemental, so the good intention will have bad outcome, a conversation become an aggressive argument.

The parents can improve the communication with their children, like being a good listener, try to understand the mind of their child, recognise their problem and mistake, current them if necessity.

Emotional problem

Referring to my observation, I found that those people with computer games problem also have emotional problem, I don’t know if they have computer games problem because of emotion problem, or they have emotional problem because of their computer games problem.

Lack of commutations with may cause insecure and the feeling of not belonging to the family, so they sore of found a spiritual home from the computer games.

Or maybe the computer games allow them to express themselves; their emotions might be repressed by their family, sociality and gender stereotypes, in the old days, people tend to rely in alcohol and drug to help them to deal with negative emotions, but now, computer games become another option for young people, which it is legal, cheap, and no evident that it can damage a person.

Lack of discipline and responsibility

I found that many teenager who has problem in computer do not have much responsibility at home, they don’t have to wash their cloths, make dinner, or taking care of others and else.

Life without meaning

According to my observation, I believe that young people with computer problem have lack of identity in their life and lack of certainly about their future. The virtual world provide them an easy approachable way to search their identity, they do not have spend years to fulfil their dream, and don’t have to be thoughtful on every choice that they make.

These young people failed to see their life in long term, they are blinded by the identity and respect in the games’ world.

Consequences

The consequences of addicted to computer games could be low achievement in academe and career, it may also affect on their relationship and life expectance, and lead to low self esteem, depression and addictive behaviour in the future.
