Neck Nerve Pain Relief Tips

Of the nerve pains that exist, neck nerve pain is one of the most constraining forms of pain. The pain can occur during sleep and a person is likely to experience it as soon as he/she wakes up. It can also occur during the day due to some kind of movement too. Although most of the cases, associated with a pinched nerve, lead to pain in the area where the nerve is located, in other cases, people suffer from pain in the shoulders, arms, and the back as well.

However, wherever the pain occurs, there is no doubt that neck nerve pain can get annoying in no time at all. Fortunately though, there are present some helpful treatments that can be used to get rid of this kind of pain.

Treating and Managing your Neck Pain

The treatments have been discussed below:

1. Use a Supportive, Comfortable Pillow:
Most people who suffer from neck nerve pain find it hard to sleep properly during the night. This trouble in sleeping comfortably can be attributed to the wrong kind of pillow, one that may fail to support the neck properly. The key therefore, is to find a pillow that eases up the pressure on the neck, back and shoulders.

There are pillows available at health stores that cater to exactly the same kind of requirements mentioned above. These insomnia pillows provide great support for the head and the neck, thereby, allowing people with neck pain to not sacrifice their sleep. It is also important to note that a lot of cases of nerve pain in the neck can be attributed to uncomfortable pillows too, that is, the pain originates due a bad pillow.

2. Avoid Sudden Movements of the Neck:
One of the mistakes that people make in the quest to correct neck pain is that they perform sudden movements to one side of the body so that the pain eases up. This is a grave mistake to make and can lead to the worsening of the pain. The reason why pain increases due to sharp movements is because the neck and the muscles are not ready for these movements. The correct way to go about treating neck pain is to perform exercises designed for the neck. These exercises help the muscles in the affected areas to become stronger, and therefore, more resistant to pain.

In addition, far from performing sudden and sharp movements, an individual should focus on performing slow and gradual head rotations before going to bed each night. These help ease both the pain and the stress associated with not sleeping properly.

3. Focus on Maintaining a Proper Posture:
While it is hard to maintain a proper posture when suffering from neck nerve pain, it is nonetheless very important to do so. Not only does maintaining a proper posture help the internal organs, but it also eases up the pressure on the bones.

An example of a bad posture when suffering from neck nerve pain is sitting for long periods. Sitting is not ideal when suffering from this pain because it shifts the head slightly forward on the neck bone. This places additional pressure on the disks in the neck. In addition, maintaining a proper posture does not allow the neck condition to worsen any more than it is, therefore, it boosts the recovery process.

4. Use Ice Packs:
Some people advocate the intake of painkillers to get rid of the pain associated with a pinched nerve in the neck. However, the effectiveness of taking one or two painkillers everyday is not much at all. A better and much more effective option is to use ice packs for treatment. The best option is to buy an ice pack and apply it to the affected area for around 15 minutes daily.

However, when an access to these packs is not possible, the simple alternative is to take some ice, wrap it in a towel, and apply it directly to the area that is hurting. Ice treatment works effectively because it blocks the pain signals from being transmitted to the brain. While making use of ice treatment though, remember to not apply the pack for prolonged periods as there is always the probability of acquiring a frost bite.

5. Keep Hydrated:
It is often difficult to focus on the basics such as drinking the right amounts of water when suffering from neck pain. However, the importance of water should never be over looked, especially when suffering from a condition such as this. People often take medication to heal the pain and not taking enough water after medication can lead to hydration problems. Therefore, always remember to drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water to boost the overall recovery process. Keeping oneself hydrated also boosts the strength by up to 70%.
