Needful

Updated on February 19, 2012

What is your need?

Need

Need

Who doesn’t have them, from air to breathe and water for life, to food for nourishment and shelter from the elements? These four are primary to our physical survival and outside of our need to breathe; we can live without them for a time.

Average length of time we can hold our breath, approximately two minutes before our muscles and diaphragm start to spasm. A magician, David Blaine, currently holds the record at 17 minutes and four seconds (Time in partnership w/CNN) http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1736834,00.html. What about water, how long can we survive without drinking? Well I found this; it seems there are a whole slew of contributing factors, anything from air temperature and relative humidity to weight, physical exertion, and even the amount of “B” vitamins currently in your system. On one side of the spectrum it is agreed no water for three days will cause dehydration and even death in some. On the other side I have read 10-14 days without water is a possibility and in an extreme case this past January, a Haitian man may have survived 27 days without water.

Lets look at food, I have read at about 3-5 days we already start depleting our fatty reserves and then dire events may start to unfold within our own bodies such as  ketoacidosis, an undesirable condition reached when the liver starts breaking down fatty tissues, yet we may go on for two months in this manner before perishing. http://www.slate.com/id/2102228. Now, how about shelter how long could we survive in the cold and heat, or the rain and sun. Well without the immediate shelter of our clothing I would say less than a day, especially in freezing temperatures and of course we have heat stroke to contend with during extremely hot weather and floods during rainy seasons either of these conditions could cause death.  http://www.ciesin.org/docs/001-338/001-338.html

These are just four needs and certainly essential, yet there are more such as sleep, exercise and my favorite need, fellowship. I am sure you can think of some others as well, but let’s explore the need for companionship for the moment. How many of you have seen the movie Cast Away starring Tom Hanks? Try this trailer w/music by Radiohead  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiKYwnfAIJs For those who are unable to view this, Tom Hanks becomes shipwrecked, more like airplane wrecked, on a deserted isle. He must not only deal with struggling to find water, food and shelter, but over time loneliness sets in and he struggles without companionship. Who is your companion, confidant, or cohort, you would miss if they suddenly went absent from our lives?

"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' Matthew 25:34-36 (NIV)

In the movie, Tom Hanks has no one to visit him. In fact his only companion on this isle is a ball, whom he names Wilson.

I believe companionship to be more than a choice we make, I truly believe it to be a need. I have seen firsthand, a woman who after losing her husband of 51 years, slowly waste away to nothing and succumb to her loneliness. I am currently visiting several elderly persons who I can see are anxious for company, I only pray I had more time to be with them.

I want to share some lyrics from a song I enjoy listening to. I believe they are appropriate for this point.

Just a castaway
An island lost at sea
Another lonely day
With no one here but me
More loneliness
Than any man could bear
Rescue me before I fall into despair

A year has passed since I wrote my note
But I should have known this right from the start
Only hope can keep me together
Love can mend your life
But love can break your heart

Walked out this morning
Don't believe what I saw
A hundred billion bottles
Washed up on the shore
Seems I'm not alone at being alone
A hundred billion castaways
Looking for a home

I’ll send an SOS to the world (2X)
I hope that someone gets my (3X)
Message in a bottle (4X)

This is written and performed by the Police and Sting, I found out that SOS is an abbreviation for Save Our Souls. It seems, besides our physical needs we also have needs of our spirit. Really, what good is living if we live it alone? Perhaps we might just fill that need by entering into a relationship, a relationship unequaled only by that of a good mother or father’s unconditional love. I am speaking of the One who created our souls firstly, now before some sign off just hear me out a little longer.

What purpose do we serve in not admitting there is so much we just don’t know? Will we become wiser pretending we are all set. No need to believe in something I can’t see, feel, touch or hear. Normally, I would agree. Just not this time, I have resisted the attention of our Creator long enough. The possibility of my soul being saved to see, feel, touch or hear things/places beyond my own understanding as of now, is too intriguing for me not to follow Him. As far as anyone else who might read this, I pray there is more to our spirit than what we currently share with each other here on Earth. Remember, this universe we have seen with telescopes millions of light years away, is only seeing what is in the forefront, I am asking you to see beyond and also to fill that need of longing for more.

Life is worth living when all our needs are met and our spirit has a friend in the Spirit, who knows what we need even if we don’t know how to ask for it.

We are not alone, Ask, Seek and Knock for your needs to be met daily.

Love is the greatest need.
