During this time of year during the holiday season when people are shopping, preparing, and getting ready for the holidays the numbers climb with 1% to 2% of the US population with people who become depressed or thoroughly over-stressed during the winter season.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) 8% of persons over 12 years of age report depression, 6% of male persuasion and 10% of the female persuasion. What is astounding is that many people do not know they have a disorder or have ever been diagnosed by a professional to have a disorder. Some people walk around for months or even years without getting the proper help so that the disorder can be treated, controlled, maintained, or even treated to being cured of the disorder.

During the holiday season an increase in financial burdens surfaces, many people just do not have the money to spend on Christmas gifts or even a dinner because of the economy and the current economic climate. This type of stressful situation could provoke an episode of depression to occur. People in general are also emotionally charged during the holidays and at a greater average to develop depression episodes with a number of the events like accidents or disasters, and any combination of events occurring during the Christmas season may very well be a development or a provoking of an episode or a catastrophic break in the person’s psyche.

Loneliness is a prevalent factor in the onslaught of depressive episodes when the holiday season rolls around, especially those who do not have any relatives or friends that are supportive in the season. It is also sadly one of the most prevalent seasons for suicide in the United States.

A change in society’s attitudes and more concentration of spreading good cheer of emotional happiness for people during the season is essential to improve the current climate of depression and the onslaught of emotional distress. We normally do not think much of it but, it could make or break someone during this holiday season. So think about what just a simple smile or hello in acknowledging people can do, and is enough to get them through the season. A card or a small gift (food basket) is even better and it will carry over in time for some individuals who are under financial stress and emotional stress of the season.

What is it about the holidays that draw out such misery and heartache where they become depressed? The holidays bring memories of a prior way of life, friendships, relationships, financial well-being, and the presence of mind-brain health. Whether it is financial, social, marital, or a stressful situation no one can be sure of an onset of a depressive episode. First, we must define and understand what Depression is, because it is a complicated mental illness that anyone can get and at any time, especially during the holiday season when it is more prevalent. Some causes or risk factors that have been observed by the Harvard Health are:

  • Loneliness
  • Lack of social support
  • Recent Stressful life experiences
  • Family history of depression
  • Marital or relationship problems
  • Financial strain
  • Early childhood trauma or abuse
  • Alcohol or drug abuse
  • Underemployment or unemployment
  • Health problems or chronic pain


Depression: Is a major emotional disorder that causes a person to have mood swings and is characterized by loss of interest in pleasurable things, low self-esteem, sadness, inability to function, avoidant personality, and loss of interest in pleasure or normal behaviors or events.

Depression is an illness that could be brought on by different types of events that cause someone to have a break in their psyche that it affects their ability to function on a normal level.

The events are not set in concrete and could be any number of things that trigger an onset of the depression. Some of the symptoms of depression are people who continually have the blues, feelings of emptiness and despair and lack of function. Some things become unbearable to overcome and function or be active and engaged ( on a normal level. When it becomes dramatic is when there are weight fluctuations in weight gain or loss, sleep loss, violence, and loss of energy. When the person exhibits Self-loathing they become reckless and exhibit compulsive behaviors and have problems concentrating. The most profound harmful and dangerous symptom is the urge to commit suicide or to commit harm to oneself or someone else.

Bipolar Disorder: Is a form of manic depression and it comes in episodes of mood changes that include impulsive behavior, hyperactivity, rapid speech, and sleep disorders. The episodes can last at least several weeks.

Schizophrenia: Is a disorder that a person cannot or has difficulty in distinguishing what is real or unreal, they cannot manage their emotions and do not relate to others normally. It is a brain disorder that affects the way the person acts, thinks, and sees the world. If a person is experiencing delusions or hallucinations this person is in serious need of mental health guidance.
