Updated on August 2, 2012

Nutrition is the science of food, a study of the effects that the substances we aqquire orally have upon the human body and how they supplements the different systems of the human body

There are two main classifications for Nutrition, Macronutrients and Micronutrients.

Macro means big therefore Macronutrients are big nutrients, they’re acquired in relatively large dosages in comparison to Micronutrients, recommended intakes are within ‘Gram’ ranges, another key distinction is that Macronutrients are calorific and can all be converted by the body into energy, to be used by the working muscles, in addition to serving as a structural material and key element in the production of functions needed to sustain life.

Micronutrients on the other hand are acquired in small dosages and the recommended intakes range within the milligrams (mg), Unlike Macronutrients they are not calorific and instead are catalysts and synergists of energy production rather than substances that can be used as actual energy.

The 3 main types of Macronutrients are Carbohydrates, Proteins and Fats

The two classifications of Micronutrients are Vitamins and Minerals
