What You Can Expect If an Ovarian Cyst Bursts

Updated on April 19, 2016

Ovarian cysts are a common medical concern in women. They are a natural part of the reproduction system though some can grow unchecked and cause a woman a lot of pain and even bodily harm. A cyst is a membrane that is filled with fluid, ovarian cysts form either on the inside of on the outer surface of the ovaries. Most cysts are not dangerous; these cysts are around the size of a pea or even smaller and heal on their own. But some cysts can grow as large as an apple if not detected in time. Unfortunately, a small percentage of cysts grow larger and can lead to the need for a hysterectomy or can result in infertility or ovarian cancer.

Some ovarian cyst burst symptoms are very specific, but a few can be misread as monthly cramping or even just stomach aches. With some exceptions, ovarian cyst symptoms can be categorized into one of three categories. The three primary symptoms are menstrual irregularities, pelvic pain and nausea.

Pain that is centralized in the abdominal area is the most reported ovarian cyst symptom. But because pain in your mid-section can be tied to so many different conditions, it remains the biggest reason why cysts aren't caught sooner. Pelvic pain usually increases during your periods, sex, and while urinating or during bowel movements. You may also feel an unpleasant pressure on your bowels or bladder that makes it feel like you need to use the bathroom when you do not, much the same way a woman late in her pregnancy feels an urgent need to urinate because of the added pressure on the bladder. The abdominal pain can expand and become lower back pain, inner thigh pain, or vaginal pain. Some women experience a constant throbbing pain while others have varying pain intensities throughout the day.

Irregular monthly periods can include painful periods or bleeding that doesn’t seem like regular menstrual bleeding. Irregularities frequently also imply that your period is lasting longer or shorter, the flow volume has changed or your period is even present at different times of the month than normal. It is not too strange to also experience excess cramping related with your period and infrequent spotting.

Nausea is the last main symptom, but a small number of women think that stomach aches and vomiting could be the effects of a cyst. The nausea is regularly caused by hormones that are out of balance because of the foreign growth on the ovary disturbing hormone production in your body. Other symptoms that are more difficult to understand are weight gain, feeling full quickly, bloat and abdominal heaviness, and losing one's appetite.

Progesterone is the hormone that regulates ovulation.
Progesterone is the hormone that regulates ovulation.

A few less common symptoms that could signify that you have an ovarian cyst can include more hair growth due the increase in hormones the cyst is incorrectly informing the body it needs to manufacture. Another infrequently reported symptoms is muscle soreness and pain on your ribs. In addition to all of this, you may feel tight nodules under your skin that feel like bruises. Another symptom that some women report is an increase in headaches.

The symptoms felt when a cyst actually bursts are sudden cramping, pain so intense you may black out, and pain localized to one specific side of your pelvis. Many women say the words “rupture” and “burst” very accurately describe the pain sensation. There is an intense period of pain that suddenly recedes in intensity. Once a cyst has actually burst, the pain is greatly cut down.

There are other types of cysts. Dermoid cysts happen when the dead cells of a failed embryo stay in the woman's body and get encased in a membrane. Endometriomas are cysts caused by the condition endometriosis when cells from the uterus grow outside of the uterus. These cells being introduced into the fallopian tubes can lead to ovarian cysts.

Overall most ovarian cysts are benign, even if they cause pain and discomfort. But it is important to not ignore ovarian cyst burst symptoms.A few ovarian cysts do cause cancer and or infertility. In general, if you experience pelvic pain and are worried that something isn't right, it is a good strategy to obtain medical attention. As you should already know, it is best to prevent ovarian cysts before they happen instead of treating them after they appear because though most cysts can be treated, simply having one increases your chance of getting cancer of being unable to reproduce.

There are very useful changes to your life that you can start making today to insure that you never have ovarian cyst burst symptoms.

I have an ovarian cyst when I was 33, it was 9cm. obgyne gave me some pills that time, i had terrible pain during menstruation but my period is normal. my doctor didnt advice surgery as I am single that time, I am now 40, since then I don't have any severe pain during period it was tolerable, but just recently a few months ago i have abnormal discharges, i shouldnt say bleeding since its not really fresh blood but its like fluids, i feel like im urinating, and the color is brownish, creamish type no alarming smell whatsoever... i had my pap smear, it was good! could this also be a cyst-rapture or something? but the pain and nausea vomiting issue is not present.... i dont know.

37 yr old. Pain started 2 months ago during wk of period. Then went away. Went to obgyn had ultrasound found 2 cm ovarian cyst. 1 have 8dys of crampy pain rt side after ovulation 1 wk ago. Worse with full bladder/ stomach& indegestion. Heavy feeling tummy. Was it cyst growth, cyst rupture or torsion? I Have my period now, Pain not constant now but comes and goes. (Worse at night or after a day of walking). Rn told me to wait till next ovulation? No follow up ultrasound? Over-the-counter pain relief doesn't really do much, only heat pad helps. Trying to be patient and wait it out.

I've had cysts since I was 14. Most are between 3-4cm and then they go away. My largest cyst was a whopping 14cm. I'm done having children so I'm getting an endometrial ablasion to lighten or stop my periods and hopefully stop the cysts. If it doesn't I'm getting a hysterectomy. My grandmother had them and she said they stopped after menopause so I just gotta get they 10 more years.

You should only have it removed as a very last resort because you will most likely be completely infertile after the surgery.

In 1966, when I was 21, I had pelvic pain, bleeding from the rectum,

and cystitis. I was a Jr. in College and studying in Germany. I had had

some pelvic pain symptoms at about the age of 13, and saw an American M.D. who was originally from the Mayo Clinic. My mother was concerned, but he stated that pelvic exams are not done on young girls.

I was in my second semester of my Jr. Year when the symptoms flared up. I was so ill that I literally crept around the city where I was studying trying to find help. First a barium enema was done due to the rectal bleeding. Only a spot was found about 8 inches up in the rectum, and no further testing was done. I then developed a severe urinary track infection that would not clear up with antibiotics. I carried it around for about two months before the student clinic finally put me in the hospital for further testing. It was there that I had my first pelvic exam done, and it was immediately found that I had a hard tumor on my left side. It was later found that the tumor was attached to a fallopian tube, the colon, and the bladder. A biopsy was done, and it was discovered that it was a dermoid cyst. Tissue was sent to many labs in Germany to determine if it was malignant, since these tumors are malignnat about 25% of the time. It turned out to be benign, but by the time they operated I had pelvic peritonitis. I was in the hospital for three months. A C section was done to remove the cyst and an abscess developed in the middle of the cyst. I finally got a plane back home to the States, where they found an abdominal abscess, and

an exploratory laparotomy was done. There was no such thing as a laparoscopy in those days. The abscess was drained, and I had a stenosis of the urethera which took two dilation surgeries to overcome.

I write all this, because I want you to know that I am now 68. My entire adult life has been not only being infertile, but in pain from the massive abdominal adhesions that had formed after the infectious peritonitis.

I have had a multitude of laparoscopies in the States, which were for the most part experimental. I tend to form even more adhesions, when an internal barrier was not used, or one of our inferior ones was tried.

It was on in the early 21st century after a hysterectomy, an unnecessary resection of the sigmoid, and plastic surgery was tried to fix the scar from the Csection abscess that extended down to the pubic symphesis. It did not penetrate the peritoneum, but nonetheless caused neuropathic pain, because this area is highly innervated. I finally am free of internal adhesions, because I went to Germany and had an adhesiolysis using Sprayshield. This barrier allows the areas where the laparoscopic surgery was done, giving the sticky surfaces of the newly separated tissue time to heal, so that it does not readhere. Sprayshield is made by Covidien, a subsidiary of Tyco. I know I am now finally free of adhesions, because a second adhesiolysis was done about four weeks after the first surgery, and there were FINALLY no adhesions present. Covidien was present at both surgeries, and was able to verify that this substance had worked. The surgery was done by a Dr. Jens Pagels. Unfortunately, for American women, Sprayshield does not have FDA approval, because it was Coviden was not able to get enough candidates to complete its clinical trials here. Interestingly, it is an American pharmaceutical company, and the pharmacologist who invented it was American. However, American women go through needless numbers of abdominal surgeries in an attempt to rid themselves of what are often painful internal adhesions. Because we do not have an effective barrier, a multitude of unnecessary surgeries are done on women. I am one, who ended up with a hysterectomy, and a resection of a kinked sigmoid caused by adhesion, because there seemed to be no other means of riding me of my symptoms. A plastic surgeon tried to fix the scar left by the abccessed Csection type scar only to make it even bigger. He then proceeded to do an unnecessary abdominoplasty or tummy tuck.

I write all this let you know that any abdominal condition that causes painful internal adhesions can have a successful lysis. However, if you are not out of pain after one or two laparoscopies, do NOT repeat another one, because everytime a surgery is done, it causes scar tissue above the peritoneum as well. This scar tissue can also embed nerves, leaving you with a neuropathy, or nerve pain above the peritoneum. There is finally have an answer for INTERNAL adhesions. However, until the FDA finally gets around to approving Sprayshield, I can only recommend that you have the adhesiolysis done in Germany for internal adhesions. There is NO good answer for scars that embed nerves above the peritoneum and cause pain. The more surgeries you have here, the more scar tissue both below and above the peritoneum may be formed. It is now

47 years later, and I was finally cured of internal adhesions, in 2010, but I still have severe pelvic pain from too many Csection type laparotomies over the same scar and an abscess that formed a scar down to the pubic symphesis caused by an abscess in a Csection scar.

I have a fairly large cyst on my right ovary and two days ago I started bleeding really bad. Like going through five to six heavy duty pads in an hour. I'm paying ping pong ball sized blood clots and my pain is getting increasingly worse. I do not have insurance nor the extra money to see a doctor. I'm scared it has ruptured. I'm also very nauseous and dizzy.

I have an ovarian cyst that is currently 4cm big. A week ago after intercourse I had excruciating pelvic pain and shooting rectal pressure and pain. I rushed to the hospital as I though I was having a miscarriage. It was then that I was told the cyst was complex and was releasing fluid which was the cause of all that pain. I was given narcotics along with laxatives since the pain caused me to have bowel movement problems. I was Also put on birth control since it was the only option available. It is unfortunate to have to deal with issues as such.

Hi I just found out that I have lots of little cysts all over my ovaries. I've always had abnormal periods and always just related the pain to menstrual cramps. One day it was so excruciating that all I dould do was stay in the fetal position & ball my eyes out. Then a few months ago I went out to dinner & when the food came I could only take 2 bites & then my stomach hurt sooo bad that I felt nausea & wanted to throw up, I thought it was food poisoning. I am way too stubborn & didn't go to the doctors. I haven't even been to the doctors in a few years. I finally just had a doc appt & my doc found out that I have pcos. You would think I would be upset but really I was just relieved that I knew what was going on instead of just shrugging it is very nice to knowing that I am not alone & that best advise it to talk to your doctor & talk with other people who have this. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!

I recently discovered that I had a cyst on my ovary and my doctor put me on birth control to see if that would help. The only reason I realized the cyst was due to severe cramps and abnormal bleeding after my period. I left the doctors office eager to start the birth control and almost instantly my pain seemed to subside also ong with the bleeding, however about a week later the bleeding came back heavier and the pains grew more severe and frequent. Does anyone know what u should do next? I mean is this normal? Thanks so much!

I have had a cyst on my left ovary for around 5 years now, I had regular internals and was told it was increasing in size every time but then it stopped growing so they stopped my scans. Recently my pain had increased at both sides and I only seem to have a period every 7 weeks and it's very light! I have also suffered from a molar pregnancy which they say is unrelated. I am getting more headaches back pain chest pain and feeling very weak and tired all the time I'm concerned it may have burst as 2 days ago I was vomiting severely for nearly 12 hours! I also suffer from anxiety so keep putting the symptoms down to that can anyone help what should I do?

Lia - I would suggest that you get it seen to asap - I had an ovarian cyst that did burst but I only knew I had a cyst when it had burst and had to drive myself to the hospital even though I could hardly sit - When I got to the hospital I started going in and out of consciousness cos I had internal bleeding and had to get my ovary and tube removed. I went around 3 years of having stomach pains and I related the pains to other things and never got it checked. Am not saying that is what you have, but best to get it checked out as there are lots of things they can do to help with a cyst. I have a cyst on my remaining ovary now, but its small and treatable.
