Piyo: The Work Out That Has Toned My Muscles and Strengthened My Whole Body Like No Other Workout Has

What is Piyo?

Piyo is an exercise program created by Chalene Johnson, and it is the perfect mix of Pilates and yoga with a little bit of cardio mixed in. It's fast paced, it's fun, it stretches you (often to the limit), and it strengthens you at the same time.

I never was a huge fan of doing exercise videos in the past. For some reason, I just didn't get much enjoyment out of them, and because of that, I had no desire to use them for a consistent exercise program.

Honestly it's amazing to me that I've become so dedicated to an exercise routine that involves pulling out a yoga mat in front of my television, but I absolutely love these exercise DVDs.

I feel like I've turned into a walking advertisement, because I've recommended Piyo to so many of my friends that aren't getting the fitness results they want from their current exercise programs.

Why I love Piyo

The following are a few of the reasons that I have fallen in love with Piyo:

  • It produces Obvious Results (fast)
  • It's challenging (even after having done it for quite some time).
  • It's easy to learn.
  • Chalene Johnson is a great workout buddy.
  • I am able to get a really great workout in a relatively short amount of time.
  • It doesn't require a lot of weights and other equipment.

How Would You Like To Have People Asking You What You've Been Doing to Lose So Much Weight?

It didn't take very long after I started doing Piyo for people to start asking me what I had been doing to lose so much weight recently.

To tell you the truth, I didn't lose a ton of weight doing Piyo (probably because at this point I don't have a whole lot of weight that I need to lose), but my body composition did change a lot.

The combination of doing stretching and strengthening exercises at the same time really helped me to develop lean muscle mass giving me a more toned look than I had ever had before.

I have quite a bit of experience with exercise, healthy eating, and weight loss after having lost almost 100 pounds, but no amount of running, swimming, biking, or doing water aerobics had given me the results that Piyo yielded in a relatively short amount of time.

Who wouldn't love a workout that brings you such noticeable results so quickly?

I agree with this lady. While I haven't lost 13 pounds, I definitely had noticeable results within weeks of beginning Piyo.

Who Doesn't Love a Challenge?

Some people might think I'm crazy, but when I work out I like to really push myself and work hard. I enjoy the feeling of having sore muscles to an extent, because I know that feeling is a sign that I am getting stronger.

I think somewhere in the back of my mind I feel like if I'm not working hard, I'm wasting my time. If I go to an aerobics class, and I don't feel like it's really pushing me to the limit, I'm not going to show up to that aerobics class again.

I think that's the reason that I got hooked on Piyo from day one. The first day that I tried Piyo, I was at my friends house and she asked me if I wanted to work out with her.

It just so happened that her workout schedule had her doing the longest and most intense of the Piyo workouts that day, and it definitely was a challenge. In fact, that workout is still a challenge for me every time I do it.

Well, I was amazed that within hours of doing that workout I was experiencing muscle soreness throughout my body.

I'm used to being a little sore the day after a tough workout, but being sore within hours was a testimonial to me that those exercises work. I was sore in places that I don't think I even knew I had muscles previous to doing that workout.

I'm not going to lie when it comes to the difficulty of Piyo. It is way hard! It's been over six months since I was first introduced to Piyo, and I still haven't mastered all of the exercises involved, but for me that's a bonus. I don't want to waste my time on a workout that isn't constantly pushing me to the limit.

I'm sure that some day I'll be able to do a perfect tricep push up, but I'm not able to go all the way up and down right now.

I just keep doing the best I can and celebrate the fact that I'm getting a little stronger with every workout I do. I've discovered that the better I get at these exercises, the more I can put into them and the better of a workout I get, so I haven't had to worry about the workout getting too easy for me.

Don't get intimidated if you find this workout to be a little bit out of your comfort zone. Just stick with it, and you will soon discover like I did that exercises that you once thought were impossible are becoming a lot easier.

Exercises That Are Easy to Learn

I think one of the main things that turned me off to doing exercise videos in the past was that I felt like I could never stay caught up with the person leading the video.

I was always still trying to figure out how to do the last exercise when the video moved on to the next one, and I found it extremely frustrating.

I would get so excited to try out a Latin dance workout video and then realize that it was impossible for me to learn the dance moves at the pace that they were presented on the video.

Doing Piyo is a totally different experience. The exercises are explained and demonstrated really well, and you have plenty of time to figure out your form and practice before moving on to something new.

The flow of these workout videos is amazing. Even when doing these videos for the very first time, I never felt any frustration about not being able to stay caught up.

Working Out With Chalene Johnson Is Like Working Out With a Best Friend

I know it probably makes me sound crazy, but I really do feel like Chalene has become a great friend after spending so many hours working out together.

She has a very positive and uplifting demeanor that motivates me to always want to do my best, and enjoy my work out. I love how during the workouts she'll say things like, "look up and be grateful."

Maybe I'm the only one that is crazy enough to follow the advice of a random stranger on a workout video, but every time she reminds me to be grateful I take advantage of that opportunity and it really makes a big difference in my attitude and outlook for the day.

Aside from being a positive and motivating influence, Chalene's sense of humor cracks me up.

You'll be doing a crazy looking exercise that feels near unto impossible when she will make a great comment like, "This is going to be a really useful exercise some day...when you join the circus."

It's little comments like that one that help me to keep a smile on my face as I work out.

Chalene really is hilarious, and it makes exercising with her a lot of fun.

Workouts That Can Fit Into a Busy Schedule

While these workouts are intense, they aren't necessarily really long. That makes it really convenient to fit a workout in even on a really busy day.

The shortest of the Piyo workouts is only 18 minutes long, and the longest one is only 45 minutes.

The Piyo DVDs come with a schedule to help you make sure that you are working your whole body evenly and giving muscle groups proper time to rest.

If you follow that schedule, it's easy for you to figure out exactly how much time you need for your workout each day.

On the other hand, if you know that your day is going to be really crazy busy, and you don't have time to fit in your scheduled 45 minute workout, you can easily deviate from the schedule for the day and do a quick 18 minute upper body workout.

You Don't Need Lots of Equipment to Get a Great Workout

The only equipment I use for my Piyo workouts is a yoga mat (which is completely optional) and a chair from time to time.

The exercises used in these workouts are formulated to use your own body weight to strengthen your muscles rather than having to use a lot of expensive equipment.

People put tons of money into gym memberships and all kinds of exercise equipment every year, and I love the idea that I can get a great workout without spending money on all of those things.

Of course, I did have to pay for my Piyo DVDs up front, but I can use them over and over again, and they aren't cluttering up my house like a set of weights would.

Challenge Yourself and Sculpt Your Body With Piyo

Now, my question is whether or not you are up to taking the challenge to try out Piyo. Like I said earlier, it's not going to be easy starting out, but I think it is completely worth it.

I am still amazed about how it has been able to tone my body like no other workout that I've tried.

Again, I know I may be guilty of sounding like Chalene hired me to promote her videos, but that is totally not the case.

I just love to share the things that have worked for me, and I consider Piyo to be an amazing success. It's given me the challenge I crave and the results I desire with the added bonus that it's a lot of fun!

This sounds great. I'm a yoga instructor, but I'd like some challenge in my own workouts. Thanks for the great info.
