Pole Dancing For Art, Exercise, and Fun

Updated on April 15, 2013

Many people are beginning to accept pole dancing as a healthy way of working out. Pole dancing has become a popular form of exercise in recent years. But its origin has gone way back in the 1920s, or probably earlier than that. It has been around in many guises. Some people attribute pole dancing to one of many circus acts. But most of us know this to be the dance routine shown in most strip clubs.

Before the 80s, pole dancing was not eye-catching and is mostly done by men. During the 80s and 90s however, it has been known as a form of striptease or exotic dancing that is more suitable and attractive when performed by women, preferably sexy women. At present, there are pole dance classes for anyone who is interested in learning its moves. Many people are acknowledging its health benefits. It can give you a total body workout. You can achieve both an aerobic or anaerobic type of workout using the pole.

Pole dancing is a combination of dancing, gymnastics, and acrobatic movements using the pole as a dancing prop or equipment. Dancers hold on to the pole to do their stunts and moves. This type of exercise demands a lot of body strength from you; from your wrists, hands and legs for firm grip, and strong core for strength.

Comfortable clothing is recommended in every exercise you choose, including pole dancing. However, for more advanced pole dancers, clothing where your arms and legs are exposed is a better choice. Sexiness aside, you’d need a good grip on the pole when you do difficult stunts and your bare skin can give a better grip than any clothing. Pole dancing can be dangerous when you’re not careful so do take some safety precautions before you set off to work on it. It is recommended not to put any lotion or creams on your skin if you are going to work on the pole as they can make your skin slippery and therefore will make it more dangerous for you.

Pole dancing has become a favorite theme in many fictional stories and films lately. While it is a good exercise in real life. In fictional stories however, it is more often associated with stripping, teasing, and love affairs leaving many people, especially women, prejudiced with this type of workout.

Hi Carin, sorry you've lost your enthusiasm because of your friends' over-enthusiasm. Hope you change your mind about this again and enjoy the sport as it is.

Well, at the beginning, I liked pole dancing to watch. Some of my friends also started to do this workout. Lately, these friends have been contributing thousands of their pole photos at FCB. I hate these photos. They are so stupid, they dance with the tree during a walk too. They are thinking only about pole..

Hi Springboard, good luck. I'm not sure if you meant you'd enjoy watching or if you'd enjoy doing 'em yourself. But it sure does look fun. ;)

Hi Billy, it sure became a serious sport lately. If not for the fit and sexy women who do them, I'm not sure if it would be recognized at all. :)

This has to be one of the most popular exercise trends for the extremely fit - the balance and intensity involved is immense. Thank you for sharing it does seem to have taken a leap into a serious sport by all reports.

Hi Katyzzz, pole dancing is for fit people. Those who have health problems should avoid this type of workout. This is quite a demanding workout. And yes, the videos I chose are some of the best ones in Youtube. You should see some of those ridiculous pole dancing videos. They're not at all provocative. :D

Well, beatsme, pole dancing, Oh dear, not for me, but it is as you say good exercise. I had never thought of it that way, but it still remains very provactive, especially with some of those camera angles, hot stuff, no matter how slow the music.
