One of the biggest complaints that post-menopausal women will make is that they are now gaining weight where previously they didn’t. It is true that foods you were once able to consume without putting on any weight are now causing you to pile on the pounds. The good news is there are ways to combat this. There are ways to not only stop the weight gain, but to reduce your weight even though you are post-menopausal. So how does it work? What is the big secret to losing weight and keeping it off after you’ve reached a certain age?
Change the way you think about dieting
No big secret there, if you want to lose weight no matter if you are twenty five or seventy five the first step is changing the way you think about dieting. This same philosophy holds true regardless of whether you have gone through menopause. For women though who have gone through menopause it is especially important that you change the way you think about dieting. Dieting has so many bad connotations associated with it that it is amazing any one loses weight at all. Consider this, instead of going on a diet you should simply change the way you think about foods. If you can change how you view the foods you eat and when you eat them you will be a lot more successful at losing weight.
Diet and exercise for the post-menopausal woman
You have to first consider that now that you are older your metabolism has greatly slowed down. So now you need to slow down your eating. Another way to think about it is that you aren’t burning as much fuel so you do not need to put as much back in. If you can cut down not only on the amount of foods you eat but also cut out some of the more harmful meals then you can begin to see the weight coming off. Exercise is important. Not just for women who are wanting to lose weight, but any woman who is going through or who has gone through menopause should consider exercising more. Exercise is important because it keeps your body and mind healthy. Daily or even weekly activity will boost not only your metabolism, but also your brain and help keep you fit both mentally and physically. Sleep is also important, as you age things start to break down, getting the proper kind of diet, the proper amount of exercise and the proper amount of sleep will help to make sure that you stay healthy.
Is weight gain a symptom or a complication
If you remember a while back we talked about causes, symptoms, and complications. Well in this case weight gain is a symptom of perimenopause and menopause in general. As already mentioned it has to do with a woman’s metabolism slowing down as she ages, and since menopause is a natural stage that all women go through, the weight gain is unfortunately a natural part of that. Luckily there are natural ways to prevent the weight gain and also to lose any excess pounds that you do manage to put on. There is one other upside to the weight gain, for most women it isn’t nearly as uncomfortable as those dreaded hot flashes.
