Prediabetes Warnings Can Be subtle.

You can feel good and still have pre-diabetes. As a matter of fact, the big reason most folks wait to check with their doctor is that they still feel pretty good. This lens discusses several valuable aspects of prediabetes as well as diabetes in general.

I am not a doctor, and  most of the questions answered in this lens are witnessed through my own life 

I am including many links and resources that I know will be helpful to anyone in doubt as to whether he/she has diabetes.

As a diabetic, I know the dangers, and I hope my experience may help you. So if there are any questions see your doctor! I hope this study is helpful.   

Some valuable Key Terms I will discuss:

Pre-diabetes:  What is prediabetes?  Prediabetes, also known as "impaired glucose tolerance," is a health condition with no symptoms.  It is almost always present before a person develops the more serious type 2 diabetes.  More than 50 million people in the U. S.  over age 20 have prediabetes with blood sugar levels that are higher than normal, but are not high enough to be classified as diabetes.

 Blood Glucose:  Glucose is a major source of energy for most cells of the body, including those in the brain.  Carbohydrates (or carbs) are found in fruit, cereal, bread, pasta, and rice.  They are quickly turned into glucose in your body.  This raises your blood glucose level.  . . .  Up to 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) is considered normal for a fasting blood glucose test. Persons with levels between 100 and 125 mg/dL have impaired fasting glucose, a type of prediabetes.  These levels are considered risk factors for type 2 diabetes and its complications.

Diabetes prevention:  This is the goal of my discussion, having experienced many of the complications of diabetes first hand.  Diabetes prevention is as basic as eating more healthfully, becoming more physically active and losing a few extra pounds - and it's never too late to start.  Making a few simple changes in your lifestyle now may help you avoid the serious health complications of diabetes down the road, such as nerve, kidney and heart damage.

Early Symptoms of diabetes are like a pre-warning system in your car. The first "early warning alert" is your blood.

You need to have it checked several times a year. With pre-diabetes, other pre-warning signs are very subtle. You must really, very carefully, very dutifully, "check your bodies' engine warning light!" This is what we mean by Pre-diabetes. Today, roughly 41 million Americans have pre-diabetes which left undetected and untreated, progresses into full-blown diabetes. The challenge with pre-diabetes is the fact that the condition doesn't like to reveal itself with very noticeable symptoms. SOLUTION: CHECK YOUR BLOOD GLUCOSE READINGS!

What are the five major warning signs of diabetes?

The five major warning signs of diabetes are:

1. Frequent trips to the bathroom
2. Persistent Thirst
3. Weight Loss
4. Weakness and Fatigue
5. Tingling or Numbness in Your Hands, Legs or Feet

There are other warning signs as well but these five are the most common. The trouble with pre-diabetes is that symptoms are (if at all) only in the beginning stages of revelation. Because there are few, if any overt symptoms, most people will not bother having screening tests performed.

With pre-diabetes, noticeable symptoms like frequent thirst and urination may not occur until the disease has progressed and is already causing considerable damage to your body.

Most Type 2 diabetics don't notice symptoms early because the onset of diabetes is so slow. Prevention is the best pre-diabetes treatment. For more reading check out "Warning Signs Diabetes."

 Your physician can determine if you have pre-diabetes with two common tests. The fasting plasma glucose test (FPG) and the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Both require an overnight fast.
 The good news is that you can greatly improve your odds and likely prevent diabetes with early detection and proper care.
 Don't wait 'til it hurts.
 Ask your doctor about diabetes and have your blood sugar checked several times a year.

      Avandia (rosiglitazone) for Diabetes, Type 2 I used Avandia 8mg once a day for 5 years and A1c went from 9 to 5.4. I had a headache in the beginning. No other problems. Then the big scare happened and my doctor took me off and I am on glipizide. I think I will go back to Avandia.

      Thanx a lot for sharing the insights. Diabetes is truly a global scare now. Recently China did a survey which predicted there are over 100 million diabetics there. The number would be similar in India.

      Lots of factors responsible. I guess we need to exercise more and eat less processed foods.

      Type 1 diabetes is usually caused by an autoimmune condition that affects the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas (called beta cells). It can also be caused by severe pancreatitis or removal of the pancreas. People with type 1 must take insulin (the hormone that helps transport glucose from the bloodstream into cells to be used as fuel or to be stored) because the body produces little to none.       @GentlemenGogoVEVO: One thing you can do, if you love chocolate, is to switch over to darker chocolates. Don't just go to dark chocolate but look at the 70% cocoa content stuff, and up. It's bitter at first, but if you train yourself to like it you will find that you can really enjoy a very small amount of it, and you end up with minimal sugar in your system. I've also seen some evidence that cocoa has anti-diabetic effects, so the high-cocoa-content chocolate may even have a positive effect on your system. Good luck!

      @Jhangora LM: Yes! I think a sedentary lifestyle, and added sugars and starches in foods, are probably the main two reasons for the explosion of diabetes.
