At some stage of our lives many of us will experience discomfort with some form of back problem. The most common complaints are due to prolonged stress on lower areas of our spine or surrounding muscle, which then ache or become painful as a result. One of the most common remedies people try to relieve this is a lumbar support cushion.

For those with jobs that require sitting for long periods of time and in one position, such as at a desk or workbench, a lot of pressure is placed on the lower back. Due to this now being a very common problem, there are companies who have designed office chairs with curved and molded backs. These ergonomic chairs are seen by many to help to relieve pain, but they can be expensive compared to normal office chairs.

As a more affordable alternative, the idea of adding a cushion is to provide movable support for these weaker areas, where there is none provided for in the design of the furniture or equipment being used. It can be moved around easily on the chair to help relieve points of greater intensity and many designs are appropriate for home and office use.

When these products first came onto the market, they were mostly made from ordinary foam. The latest versions however, which are made from more versatile substances, such as memory foam, are seen by most as far more beneficial. Once in position, this material will adjust to the curve of the spine as it heats up and will also usually retain that shape when not being used. This can be particularly useful in a vehicle, as drivers will tend to leave their seat in the same position every time.

Similarly, when driving you can be sitting in the same position for long periods of time. As with chairs, aches and pains will often surface due to the vehicle's seat being made to a general shape and not molded to that of the human spine. This creates great discomfort and could in turn be dangerous, as the symptoms persist and increase over time and the driver tries to adjust their position.

For a person experiencing this unpleasant situation in their vehicle, getting an ergonomic seat is not always a simple option as many cars do not have this feature. With this in mind, one possible solution supported by many people already, is to get the more specifically designed lumbar support cushion for car.

Another possible use for one of these cushions, is for correcting poor posture. Sitting without sufficient support to the lumbar area of the back is thought by many to contribute to slouching. This in turn may lead to aches and pains, which it is believed this specialized cushion can help to correct.

Many people believe that these aids can delay the onset of more serious conditions and therefore more intensive treatments. If a person is experiencing constant or very severe backache then it may be advisable to seek further advice from a doctor or specialist. A more serious problem may not be relieved by the use of a lumbar support cushion. However, for discomfort related to long periods of sitting still or driving, it is widely viewed as an effective solution.
