Reiki and How to use it on Yourself

Updated on September 9, 2014

Using Reiki to Heal Yourself

Using Reiki to heal yourself is an excellent way to take control of your health. Clearing energy blocks in your system means you can return your body to its optimum health. The word Reiki is Japanese. Rei means spiritual or sacred; ki means energy. This energy is the energy of all living things. Mikao Usui is considered the founder of Reiki. Hawayo Takata was the first student to use his teachings in the West, and was taught by Chujiro Hayashi. Hawaya Takata established a clinic in Hawaii in 1938. Originally Usui teachings were known as 'Usui do' - 'the way of Usui', and his healings 'Usui teate' - 'Usui hands on healings'.

Reiki is a wonderful healing modality that aligns the energy fields of the human body. It balances the chakras and clears any energy blocks in the body. When someone has been attuned to the Reiki energy they can channel reiki energy through themselves to the person they are performing Reiki on. The energy comes through the crown of your head and out through the palms of your hands. This is a hands on healing modality. It is possible to use the suggested hand positions on yourself without an attuning. I am sure you would feel some benefit, but after attunement there is usually a better flow of energy and your hands feel hotter. This is what I found anyway. Before I had my attunements I practised the positions on myself and found it very relaxing.

I have been attuned to Reiki one and Reiki Two. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience but generally only do Reiki on family and friends and myself of course when I remember or if I have a sore bit. I usually find it helps and I think people can help themselves with various aches and pains by placing their hands on the parts of their bodies that ail them. Keep them there for a minimum of five minutes if possible.

If you want to give yourself a full Reiki treatment there are twelve hand positions usually used over the body.

  • hands over eyes
  • sides of head from temples to top of skull
  • across back of head - one hand facing each way
  • around throat - wrists joined at front
  • across chest above breasts in women fingers meeting at centre
  • under breasts fingers meeting at centre
  • fingers meeting across belly button
  • one hand on each side where legs meet torso
  • hands over each shoulder facing down back
  • one hand across chest/breast, other hand under back back hand up
  • one hand each side fingers meeting in middle of back around waist area
  • hands with fingers facing down meeting on tail bone in a V shape.

The above hand positions are only guides and you can change them as you feel fit. If there is a particular part of your body that you feel needs healing then place the hands there. Daily Reiki sessions are suggested for optimum benefit and to increase you vibrational coherency. Scientific research has shown that Reiki improves the oxygen levels in blood. It is important that we have high oxygen levels for our health. The more you use Reiki the more coherent your energy becomes, physically, emotionally and mentally. It is said Reiki energy goes to the part of the body that needs it most first whether your hand placement is there or not.

Thanks for explaining reiki and the hand positions. I use visualization techniques with the seven chakras to meditate and reduce body tension. I can see how reiki could fit fit in well.
