Review of concepts related to abortion
1. What is abortion?
Answer: any interruption of a pregnancy before the fetus is viable (viability means the ability of the fetus to survive outside the uterus if born at that time, this is usually pegged at 24 weeks and above when the fetal alveoli has formed)
2. Is abortion the same as miscarriage?
Answer: nursing books try to define it too as a pregnancy being medically or surgically interrupted ; but when the pregnancy is spontaneously interrupted, this is properly termed miscarriage
3. What do you mean by a nonviable fetus?
Answer: There are two things to consider, one is the age of gestation ( 20-24 weeks) and the second is the weight ( 500g or less), some would just consider just one of the factors. The fetus at this point is called premature or immature.
