Review of the Sunny Health and Fitness Rowing Machine

Updated on February 26, 2018

If you've ever considered buying a rowing machine you may have been scared off by the price tag. Most rowing machines costs hundreds of dollars. I've wanted to buy one for a few years because I suffer from back pain. I wanted a rowing machine both to have an exercise method that keeps me off my feet and one that works my back muscles. So, I was delighted when I stumbled across the Sunny Health and Fitness Rowing Machine. I paid a total of $72.

I was concerned that a deal like this was too good to be true. Surely the quality couldn't be great for that price. But the 4.5 star ratings on convinced me to give it a try.

Unlike most rowing machines where you pull the handlebar out and it pulls back, the Sunny Health and Fitness Rowing Machine has a handlebar that you pull and push back. For this reason, it may not have the same effect as traditional rowing machines. While it may not be for serious athletes it should be fine for most people who want a simple and effective way to stay in shape. It will exercise your shoulders, abs, upper back, and legs.

10 Benefits of Rowing Machines

The machine is small and light at only 20 pounds but it seems to be very sturdy. I've been using it twice a day for 5 minutes each for the last couple of months and it's been functioning just fine. I'm only 110 pounds. I don't know if it could withstand the weight of a very heavy person. It may not be long enough for someone who is much over six feet tall. The assembly is also very simple and took only about 20 minutes.

The dimensions are 53L x 20W x 22H inches and the machine weighs only about 20 pounds. It's easy to move around and because it's small it won't take up a lot of room making it perfect for apartments and condos.

Levels of Resistance

The machine has 12 levels of resistance. I'm only using level 2 at the moment and it provides a great workout. It gets my heart rate up and I can feel it working my back, shoulder, abdominal and leg muscles. Even if you're in very good shape, this rowing machine should still give you a good workout.

Electronic Monitor

The electronic monitor displays exercise time, row count, and approximate calories burned. It's a very simple monitor. It has one red button that you have to hold down for a few seconds to reset.

Cylinder Gets Hot

I haven't had this particular problem and I'm not sure how long or intense the exercise session has to be but some reviewers on amazon have complained about the cylinder getting hot and losing resistance. Here is one review excerpt:

Resistance cylinder GETS HOT:
The heat its self isn't a problem but as it heats up it losses its resistance. my solution was to simply start at a lower resistance and once it warmed up increase the resistance to the desired level. Also this seems to be a common problem as i found similar comments on reviews of other produces with the same resistance method.

So, this is something to consider in advance but my guess is it might only be an issue for longer workouts and higher resistance levels. If you plan to do long and intense workouts you may want to look into a more expensive machine.

To Sum Up

If you're looking for a small, lightweight, and affordable rowing machine, you probably can't go wrong with the Sunny Health and Fitness Rowing Machine. It may not be for serious athletes and people who want intense workouts. It probably won't provide as good a workout as the expensive rowers you'll find in gyms. But it should provide a good workout for most people. And it's surprisingly sturdy for around $70. I was nervous buying this rowing machine due to quality concerns but I've been very happy with it.
