Salmon oil and brain function

Salmon has always been called a brain food and now scientists at Massey University in New Zealand have identified salmon oil and Omega 3 essential fatty acids as vital ingredients for better brain health.

According to Professor Welma Stonehouse a DHA- rich supplement can improve aspects of memory function. The study shows that after treatment, memory, working memory and speed of recovering a memory were all improved. DHA, docosahexaenoic acid, may be key in preventing Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

Omega 3 essential fatty acids make up at least 8% of our brain and DHA is the highest concentrated fatty acid in the brain. Our brains are mostly made out fat, and brain function its strengthened by healthy fats found in salmon oil supplements. Omega 3 essential fatty acids supports the brain by reducing inflammation and improving connections between neurons.

There are different types of fish oil however salmon contains a greater concentration of Omega 3 essential fatty acids Salmon oil supplements are manufactured from cold pressed salmon oil and screened for pollutants.

Omega 3 essential fatty oils are crucial to human beings as our bodies cannot manufacture them. The oils lubricate arteries and help to maintain the fatty tissues in the brain.
Lubrication of the arteries is very important as this ensures arteries and blood vessels stay flexible, and free from deposits of saturated and LDL cholesterol

Recent research from Maryland Medical center shows that Omega 3 essential fatty acids, such as found in salmon oil, improve the level of good cholesterol in the blood and reduce bad cholesterol.

The research from New Zealand is particularly interesting as the control was quite large, and continually assessed.

176 healthy adults were given DHA supplements over a six month period, and during this time memory and cognitive function were compared to another group of adults which were given a placebo. After six months the study showed that memory and cognitive function were significantly improved in the group which received the DHA supplement.

Cognitive functions are important brain functions, memory and memory recall, they affect our daily activities such as driving, reading, and doing exercise. Unfortunately today we eat less fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and anchovy and this contributes to the rise in diseases such as Alzheimers and strokes. Taking a supplement such as salmon oil is a step in the right direction, and can also help with cardiovascular health, stiff joints, better skin tone and is also known to improve vision as salmon oil improves the blood supply to the back of the eye.

Salmon oil also supports a healthy immune system and could reduces the risk of thrombosis in diabetes sufferers.

A safe dosage would be 1000 mg taken three times per day.

Caution: if you are receiving treatment with blood thinning drugs such as Warfarin consult with your doctor before taking any Omega 3 supplements.
Omega 3 supplements thin the blood and may increase the risk of bleeding.
If you are on cholesterol, or drugs that lower triglycerides (blood fats) ask your health care provider to monitor your LDL cholesterol and triglyceride level closely as you may see a sharp drop in both levels. Your medication may need to be adjusted accordingly.

A positive note:
I have seen amazing drops in triglycerides levels with salmon oil. A friend's level dropped over the course of 60 days from 650 mg/dl to 80 mg/dl. This level is somewhat low and should be between 100 - 150 mg per dl according to Spanish cardiologists. Spain sees one of the lowest level of triglycerides in the world which is thought to be a result of the Mediterranean diet.

A fantastic result and it has been maintained. He no longer takes his conventional medication for high blood fats and has also lost weight. His LDL cholesterol level has gone down as well and he has known working towards cutting out saturated fats such as red meats and cheese from his diet. He also says his memory has improved and his reaction speed has improved.
