Scented Candles Can Affect Your Mood

Updated on November 8, 2012

Scented candles can make any ordinary room special with their specific and wonderful scents. They are great to have around holiday time especially Christmas for that extra special holiday appeal and they can make any evening more romantic. Research has also discovered that scented candles which contain essential oils can do more than enhance a room they can also affect how you feel. These essential oils have the possibility to trigger parts of your brain which in turn sends signals to your body telling it to relax, They can also lower stress levels and boost your mood.

In a study done at Yale University it was discovered that there are certain scents which aromatherapy candles release that can temporarily lower your blood pressure. In the tests done those who were exposed to particular scented candles had their blood pressure drop by an average of 3 to 5 points. The scent with the greatest level of effect was spiced apple and once your blood pressure drops you will see that you feel more relaxed and will be in a much better mood.

For those of you who don’t sleep well or who have had periods of Insomnia scented candles to the rescue. Studies have shown that scented candles can help people fall asleep a lot more easily at night. Two scents which help calm people and reduce anxiety are lavender and sandalwood. In a study which was done at The University of Maryland Medical Center it was discovered that inhaling lavender helped a lot of people who had sleeping disorders to fall asleep. With both lavender and sandalwood scents people were able to have a much deeper and more restful sleep. Sleeping well at night makes people wake up feeling refreshed and energetic. Lavender also helps people feel more positive.

Aromatherapy has also been known to temporarily bring relief to people who suffer from depression. Of course since depression is a serious medical condition no aromatherapy can cure it but it sure can help to bring at least a bit of relief. The scents which helped to boost moods by targeting the endocrine system which caused the brain to release tension, nervousness and negative emotions were peppermint, lemon, chamomile and jasmine. Other scents which can aid in relieving some depression symptoms by triggering happy memories are cinnamon, vanilla, rose and cedar.

Not only can your mood improve through the use of aromatherapy candles but your energy levels can be lifted as well. The scents which can make you feel more excited, energetic and positive as you go about your day are citrus scents such as grapefruit, orange and lemon. In a study done at Mie University in Japan it was discovered that inhaling citrus scents also improved immunity thus providing protection from disease and kept energy levels higher. In particular the scent of grapefruit can trigger feelings of joy and happiness making a person feel so much more alert and energetic. If you have ever experienced a feeling of drowsiness during the day you can stimulate yourself with the aroma of peppermint.

Among the popular scents are:

Scents which represent the great outdoors like fresh air, green grass, the beach, water, and pine all remind people of vacations and happy times hiking or walking in the forest or on the beach and such. It is known that these types of scents can make people weather the winter better by filling their rooms with these aromas and then letting imagination do the rest.

Citrus scents which fill the rooms with aromas of grapefruits, oranges or lemons can make people feel happier and more energetic. They bring along with them the feel of a clean and sparkling home.

Warm and cozy scents such as vanilla, pumpkin or brown sugar and can make people think of holidays and happy times with family and friends. They are simply very feel good aromas.

Scents which bring about feelings of relaxation and indulgence such as mint, sandalwood, green tea or lavender. They also enhance one’s mood and can make people feel as if they have just experienced a visit to a spa.

Scents for that romantic evening:

Cinnamon – which seems to have a greater affect even than perfume to bring on that feeling of romance.

Vanilla – even though it is just a simple scent it appears that neither men nor women can resist it’s smell making one feel so comforted and just plain good.

Lavender – one of the most calming scents and it is relaxing too. For an evening of hand holding, kissing and tender feelings this one’s a winner.

Ylang Ylang – a scent which has long been used as an aphrodisiac and has mood lifting effects. It has a sweet, soft, flowery fragrance that is simply irresistible.

Oranges – Orange blossoms consists of an essential oil which is known as neroli and it is one of the oldest aphrodisiacs around. Perhaps forget about tossing rose petals about and toss orange peels.

Jasmine – providing a floral and wood scent brings on an old-fashioned type of feeling which both men and women adore.

Romance by Candlelight

There can be nothing better

Bringing about a feeling of longing

An ache deep inside

To reach out to the one you love

Warmth and fragrant candles

Fiery kisses deep in the night

Holding hands

And feeling alright

Nothing says romance

Like lighted candles

All about

Wafting fragrance in the air

Heightened feelings

Of love contained inside

A heart that begins beating

Along with the pulsating candle flame

Romance by candlelight

As old as time

Throughout the centuries

Says I love you like nothing else can

Lovers have long been known to succumb

To golden candlelight that flickers

And glows so soft

Bringing tender silhouettes on the walls

Lovers have long been known to succumb

To the glow of moonlight

Which seems to make everything silvery bright

And love so very right

A combination irresistible

Candlelight and moonlight

While lovers entwined

Sleep sated through the night

This is so true, the right scents can affect the mood of people. My wife and I enjoy scented candles. It's relaxing. But we learned that some candles are better than others. Some may have great scents but do not last long. Quality candles is always the best buy.

Another of your lovely poems.....about one of my "favorite things." I love to light candles after sunset and sit in the glow and soft scents of apples, cherries or lavender...It is so calming and restful. And the fragrance remains in your home for hours after you've snuffed out the candles. There is a definite connection between fragrance and mood. I agree 100%.

What a wonderful hub! :) Great information, pictures, and a poem! You covered all the bases. I have to admit that I am very partial to citrus and lavender scents, like in hand cream or lotion. Interesting that lavender produces better sleep. I will check that out. And of course for fall and Christmas I favor cinnamon apple -- nice to know that it lowers blood pressure. :)

It is amazing how much a scent can affect one's mood. My daughter loves candles, and the house usually smells of one thing or another as she lights them everyday.

Scented candles do make a person have different kinds of emotions Millionaire Tip. Especially a soft scent can relax on before bed. My favorite holiday scents are pine and apple.

I love scented candles! I always get festive with them and burn the pine scented ones at Christmas. For some reason, even though I like the smell, I can't bring myself to burn a pine scented one if it isn't Christmas. I guess I have to be in a Christmas-y mood to burn them.

Interesting article, good information, definitely voted up!
