Self Examination of the Breast
Do Self Examination of your Breast every month.
Breast self examination is simple!
Self examination of both the breasts by a woman is a simple technique which can be carried out at home. Though the usefulness of the procedure in detecting breast cancer at an early stage is disputed there is no doubt that it is helpful in knowing about the presence of new lumps, discharge etc for which she can seek expert advice. The examination is best carried out 3-5 days after the menses have started when the breasts are not lumpy or tender. A woman past menopause should do the examination the same day every month. It is easier to examine the breast tissue lying down. Place your right hand behind your head and with the middle fingers of your left hand, gently press down using small motions to examine the entire right breast.Next examine your armpit, because some breast tissue is present in that area. Squeeze the nipple gently checking for discharge. Repeat the process on the left breast. Next, standing in front of a mirror with your arms by your side, look at your breasts directly in the mirror for the presence of dimpling, puckering or indentations. Repeat the same with your arms raised above your head and check to see if the nipple turns inward. You would most likely not have found any changes. Relax and go about doing your chores ! However if you do find something suspicious go and see your doctor right away!
