The fact is that depression is higher in women than men all over the world. Close to 12 million of women in the US suffer from depression. And women are noted to be three times more likely to face depression than men. The causes of depression in women vary depending on issues surrounding them. Women are more prone to depression symptoms like oversleeping, overeating than men.

These scary facts are enough to make you want to keep alert on the signs of depression in women.

Below are the signs of depression in women that you should be watchful of.

Signs of depression in women

Weakness and fatigue: one common sign of depression in women is weakness and inability to work for a long time. They struggle to work even in the few moments they commit to work. Domestic work becomes a problem.

Excessive sleep or Insomnia: This signs of depression in women varies from under to oversleeping. Waking in the middle of the night becomes a habit because her mind is never at rest. But to some, they experience oversleeping. Waking up becomes a problem and they always just want be in bed.

Eating too much or less: Because she eats too much she starts to gain weight. Women do not really like to add and just continue adding weight. Every woman loves to look sexy and perfect. The truth is just that a depressed person isn’t even aware that she is eating too much. It suddenly dawns on her after a big change in her physical appearance. Keep watch of this sign of depression.


Loss of interest in activities: Another sign of depression in women is the fact that they tend to lose interest in social activities they used to love and enjoy. The activity becomes suddenly less pleasurable and makes little sense to them again. Because she is possessing low energy, she does doesn’t feel the urge to even participate at all. This might be an opportunity to have fun and feel better but the urge is lost.

Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and hopelessness: She usually feels bad about herself. A woman suffering from depression loses her self esteem and feels that everybody else is better than her.

Difficulty in remembering: She forgets things too much. This sign varies in intensity in women. Victims exhibit different degrees of lack of memory.

Thoughts of suicide: This sign of depression in women is the most dangerous. She feels she isn’t needed around anymore; that she is a liability rather than an asset; that she needn’t exist. To tell you the truth, this thought isn’t the case but it is the unfortunate feeling that comes up over time when depression sets in.

Difficulty in maintaining romantic relationships: She starts to lose interest with the relationship she might be in. She begins to find unnecessary faults in her partner because the relationship seems not to make sense to her anymore.

Easily angered: A depressed person will get irritated easily with just about anybody from close relations to friends to strangers. Though this sign of depression might be more prominent in men than in women but it is certainly significant in women.


Learning about the signs of depression in women can help to reduce risk of being totally depressed. If you have experienced these signs for more than two weeks then you need to see a doctor, counselor or therapist to overcome it.

      Many women suffer from depression but don't take it seriously or don't even realize they are depressed. Good information.
