How Silver Fillings Can Disrupt Your Health
One of the greatest surprises of my life was to learn that the seven or so silver dental fillings in my mouth are more accurately labeled mercury fillings! Did you know that so-called silver fillings or amalgams are composed of 50% mercury, 14% silver and other metals such as copper, tin and sometimes zinc? The silver color comes from the mercury, not the silver. And did you also know that mercury itself is more toxic than lead? If you have silver/mercury dental fillings, you will be inhaling mercury vapor twenty four hours a day.
Let me share with you my own personal story. After researching this problem the last three years, I approached my dentist about the possibility of removing my silver/mercury dental fillings or amalgams from my mouth. His initial reaction was to schedule a personal one-on-one meeting to discover why I would need to do that. "Do you think that I would have them in my own mouth if it wasn't safe", he stated. "Do you think that the American Dental Association would approve of them if it were not safe?" he also added. " I placed them in my own brother's mouth." The comments made me back off for a while.
Research That's Hard to Ignore
Still convinced by simple common sense (how could mercury in one's mouth not be anything but harmful to one's health), I pursued my research. I came across a gentleman who has dedicated the last ten years of his life to research the cause and treatment of cancer: Bill Henderson, Cancer-Free: Your Guide to Gentle, Non-Toxic Healing (3rd Edition, 2008). In the last two years, he has interviewed several distinguished guests on his weekly radio show (www.WebTalkRadio.net) who share the link between silver amalgams to cancer and a host of other health problems. Dr. Carlos Garcia, Dr. Stuart Nunnally,Sandi Zeitman and Ron Strauss are just a few you may be highly interested in listening to (see Archives on Bill's Radio Page).
Furthermore after further research and reading the book, The Roots of Disease by Robert Kulacz, D.D.S. and Thomas Levy, M.D., J.D (one dental surgeon and the other cardiologist)., I was convinced of the rampant dental toxicity prevalent in millions of individuals' mouths due to root canal treatment or cavitations left from wisdom teeth that wreck terrible havoc within the body. Since I also had a root canal procedure, I knew I had to act and could no longer dismiss this issue.
My First Big Step
Soon I consulted a biological dentist who looked into the health and present state of my mouth and teeth unlike any other doctor before. I arranged for him to take out three silver fillings initially and then learned I had two crowned teeth that may contain amalgams underneath as well. To verity, I needed to consult my original dentist who, after several requests, gave me the unfortunate verification. Strangely, I should have realized this myself as an x-ray showed a blue "tatoo" of mercury on my gum just under one of the gold crowns.
Later, reading Dental Mercury Detox by Sam Ziff, Michael Ziff, D.D.S. and Mats Hanson, Ph.D. (2007 eighth edition, International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicity), I further discovered that "If the amalgam filling is in direct contact with gold, it can sometimes evaporate more mercury than all other amalgam fillings together (page 8)." I would also need to replace both crowns and fillings under them. I scheduled the appointment.
Symptoms of Elemental Mercury Vapor Exposure:
Here are just a few of the many symptoms common to amalgam-poisoned patients (see pages 9-10, Dental Mercury Detox):
1. Psychological Disturbances: Irritability,Loss of Memory,Fits of Anger,Anxiety or Insomnia.
2. Oral Cavity Disorders: Bleeding Gums,Loosening of Teeth,MetallicTaste and Tissue Pigmentation.
3. Gastrointestinal Effects: Constipation or Diarrhea or Gastrointestinal problems including colitis.
4. Systematic Effects: Alterations in Blood Pressure,Pain or Pressure in Chest,Chronic or Frequent Headaches,Dizziness, Fine Tremors,Allergies,Cold Clammy Skin,Dim or Double Vision, and Fatigue
Why Go to a Biological Dentist?
One of the best reasons to visit a biological dentist is that he examines your entire mouth. He can test your gum health for peridontal disease through a special DNA test and prescribe antibiotics to ride your mouth of the disease. Likewise, he will most likely test your blood to discover which metals (used in replacement crowns) are not compatible with your blood type. When silver amalgams are removed, the teeth are then filled with non-toxic white amalgam. He follows a strict protocol in removing mercury authorized by the Interntional Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. This involves protecting you from breathing in the mercury vapor that will occur when the filling is removed by applying a high suction vacuum and allowing you to breathe fresh oxygen through a tube in your nose. The filling used to replace the mercury amalgam contains no toxic elements, unlike some of the new white amalgams used by some dentists that use harmful plastics.
What Can I Do About Mercury Poisoning?
The first step in dealing with mercury poisoning is to assess the mercury level in your body. There are several labs available with mailed-in kits (I used Doctor's Data, Inc.in St.Charles, Illinois), though you may prefer to consult an appropriate doctor. Next taking the right supplements may also be helpful (This is not medical advise I am giving. Again refer to your doctor), such as glutathione, vitamin B-6 and B-1,silymarin, vitamin C, selenium and zinc. Supplements aim to help more with the cause of a disease rather eliminating the symptoms. Both a restricted diet and lifestyle changes may also be in order. A visit to a naturopathic doctor and/or a physician would be a wise decision.
The Story Continues
As I write this, I am awaiting my dental appointment to remove two gold crowns and the dental amalgam fillings underneath of mercury and silver. It will be quite a mental and physical relief to me when that goal is over. Next up will be to remove the root canal tooth I have in my upper right jaw. As mentioned before root canal teeth (actually dead teeth) can cause major havoc to one's health. Afterwards, I will share the results in a hubpage. Until then, I will continue to research and study the relationship between one's teeth and gums and the body's health.
I hope this information has opened your mind to the danger of silver amalgams. If not, perhaps you would like to view the video below Smoking Teeth.
