Simple Art Activity that Provides Stress Relief, even for Anxiety Disorder

How to do it:
You will need the following supplies:
-Colored pencils, crayons, or markers. ( I like colored pencils, easier to shade)
- A black pen (thickness depends on you)
- sturdy paper and a surface to use to draw on (might want to line with newspaper in case you draw off the paper, it happens!)
- A music machine. Whatever you wish. Pick a song to describe how you feel. If you need an uplifting song I recommend this one.
- A space where you can be COMPLETELY alone. I don't care if its in the closet. You need to be alone to be allowed to let your emotions flow without interruption or the fear of judgement.
-A blindfold, a sock, a tie..something to put over your eyes. Peaking is cheating, and it won't have the same effect if you cheat.
Get the song to the beginning of your "favorite part" or you can chose to listen to it entirely.
Then, have your paper set up on a sturdy surface. Get the music set up. Grab the pen. grab the remote, or get the music ready to go (or you can start it early) Using a facemask, tie or something similar, blind fold yourself.
Now find your paper. Take a deep breath, and allow yourself to release all your emotions. Feel it drain from you. As it drains from your fingertips, allow the energy and emotion to draw nonsense lines on the paper. Don't worry about what it looks like, if they intersect...none of that matters. NONE. Just draw until you feel you want to stop, or until your music stops.
Once you have completed step one, take off the blindfold (obviously). Very relaxed, study your picture. You will soon see shapes, inside of shapes, inside of other shapes. Little cute spaces, big burly ones. Pick your colors, and color as you wish. You can add patterns or detail to your spaces as well.
Your drawing is not something that you should be able to finish in one day, but rather something you come back to when you are feeling anxiety or stress, listen to music, and just color. In order to release stress, you have to learn how to release emotion. Even if, its only for a little while, you will notice a drastic difference in your mood.
You can also use this exercise with children, just modify it to fit your children's needs.
