The term coconut can be used to describe the entire coconut palm, seed or the fruit. Coconut is eaten by many people in various parts of the world. As common with fruits, coconut fruit has many health benefits. This article attempts to discuss some of the health benefits of coconut.

Coconut water is an aqueous solution found inside coconut fruit. It is a clear liquid and it contains high amount of minerals and this makes it an electrolyte. Because of having high amount of minerals like potassium, this makes it to perform various functions associated with these minerals. Also coconut water is excellent in providing hydration. The water has been used as an intravenous hydration fluid in some developing countries where saline was unavailable. This water is free from fat.

When these organic acids reach the body they are transformed into corresponding monoglycerides, namely monolaurin, monocaprin, monocaprylin, and monocaproin. These newly formed compounds are able to kill microorganisms and thereby helping body in destroying pathogenic microorganism.

However, it is quite important to know that many health organizations advise against the consumption of high amounts of coconut oil due to its high levels of saturated fat.
