Sleep deprivation can become a serious problem that effects work and day to day functions. If you suffer from insomnia or any other sleep disorder, then hopefully this article will give you some ideas that will help you relax and get a better nights sleep. For those who believe they may have sleep apnea, it may be worth your time to get checked by a doctor. Sometimes it is not serious but better to understand what is happening.

Sleep Deprivation Symptoms

Here are some very common symptoms caused by a severe lack of sleep.I had insomnia for many years so I could identify with many of the problems related to not sleeping. If any of these seem familiar you probably are suffering from sleep deprivation and need to find a remedy sooner then late

Mood Swings

  • It is very common for a person who has not had enough rest to lash out at others and feel upset about the smallest things. Getting irritated easily is a good indication that you are not getting enough sleep.

Eating Habbits

  • Many who suffer from insomnia also tend to have strange eating habbits. Because they do not get enough rest they spend alot of time eating especially in the late night hours

Memory Loss

  • You are tired and so is your brain. Your whole body needs rest each day to reviatalize. Lack of sleep causes temporary impairment and a lowered brain activity.

Depression

  • This is a quite common symptom of those who are sleep deprived. Being tired all the time makes it much harder to get things done. Many times this lack of sleep will lead to depression only making the problem worse

So what really causes sleep deprivation? There are a variety of reasons one might have trouble falling asleep but in the cases of chronic insomnia here are some of most common causes of sleep deprivation.

  2. Work related anxiety
  3. Medical conditions (fatigue)
  4. Hormones
  5. Overactive mind

Treating Sleep Disorders

So now you understand some of the main causes related to sleep disorders such as insomnia but what can you do to get more rest? Here are a few tips to help you sleep.

  1. Stay away from sugar and alchoholic beverages during the night
  2. Try to go to bed at the same time each day
  3. Meditation and stretching before sleep
  4. Only hit the sack when tired. Avoid tv and games before bedtime
  5. Less time in bed to make yourself more tired the following day

Medication

If you would consider getting prescribed medication for the treatment of your sleep disorder, here is a list of the most common for those who are sleep deprived. These medications should only be taken if prescibed by your doctor. Also only take them right before planning to sleep as most of these will cause extreme drowziness and slower reaction times. Stay away from driving or doing anything that requires heavy concentration.

Natural Remedies

Want to fall asleep each night but are not willing to go the prescription drug route. Of course there are also sleep aids such as Tylenol pm and Advil pm which can be bought right over the counter but if a totally natural remedy is what you want give these a try.

  3. No Smoking At Bedtime
  4. Dont Eat Alot Of Food Before Bed

Sleep Apnea

People who suffer from the condition "sleep apnea" often go very long periods while sleeping without taking a breath. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (osa) is a blockage in the nasal passage obstructing proper breathing. Sleep apnea is a very common problem and can stike any persons from adults to children.

If sleep apnea is left untreated high blood pressure, memory loss, and headaches are often the result. There are cures for sleep apnea along with many support groups and forums where people get together to share stories along with cures to this problematic sleep disorder.
