South Beach Diet Phase 1 at Ruths Chris Steakhouse
When it comes to the South Beach Diet's first phase, you can't beat the number of options on the menu at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. This restaurant is a low-carb haven if there ever was one. Here is a list of all of the available options for SBD Phase 1 or any low-carb diet you may be on.
Crabtini--Colossal lump crabmeat with their house vinaigrette, served with Creole remoulade sauce in a chilled martini glass. The sauce is a Cajun mayonnaise based type dressing, so if it's on the side, use it sparingly.
Barbecued Shrimp--Sautéed New Orleans style shrimp that is cooked with white wine, butter, garlic and spices.
Shrimp Remoulade/Shrimp Cocktail--Jumbo Gulf shrimp that is dressed with your choice of remoulade sauce or their spicy New Orleans homestyle cocktail sauce. The cocktail sauce is probably the safest bet on any diet.
Mushrooms Stuffed with Crabmeat--Broiled mushroom caps with jumbo lump crab stuffing, and sprinkled with Romano cheese.
Sliced Tomato and Onion--Sliced beefsteak tomato on a medley of lettuces and topped with sliced red onions, vinaigrette and bleu cheese crumbles. If possible, ask for the dressing on the side and use it sparingly.
Steak House Salad--Iceberg, romaine and baby lettuces with cherry tomatoes, garlic croutons and red onions. Just avoid the croutons and ask for a low-carb dressing such as ranch or blue cheese on the side.
Caesar--Crisp romaine tossed with Romano cheese, garlic croutons and creamy Caesar dressing. Topped with shaved Parmesan cheese and sprinkled with fresh ground pepper.
Again, ask for the croutons to be omitted and have the dressing on the side so you can control the amount.
Ruth's Chop Salad--Julienne iceberg lettuce, spinach and radicchio are tossed with sliced red onions and mushrooms, chopped green olives, bacon, eggs, hearts of palm, croutons, blue cheese and lemon basil dressing. Served with cherry tomatoes and topped with crispy fried onions. Just ask them to omit the croutons and fried onions, and you have a winner with this one.
Baby Arugula Salad--Fresh baby arugula is tossed with sliced red onion, mushrooms and a warm bacon dressing. It's then topped with crisp bacon and chopped egg. Another winner, but have them serve the dressing on the side.
Vine Ripe Tomato & Buffalo Mozzarella Salad--Sliced Beefsteak tomato with basil and fresh buffalo mozzarella cheese, and served with balsamic vinaigrette.
Lettuce Wedge--A crisp wedge of iceberg lettuce is served on field greens and topped with crumbled blue cheese, and your choice of dressing.
Filet--The most tender cut of corn-fed Midwestern beef and also lean.
Petite Filet--A smaller, but equally tender filet, this one is ideal for SBD Phase 1 because of its serving size.
Petite Filet and Shrimp--Two 4-ounce medallions of beef filet and topped with jumbo Gulf shrimp. Another SBD Phase 1 winner, but you don't necessarily need to eat both filets.
Veal Chop with Sweet and Hot Peppers-A veal chop that is marinated in a savory blend of pepper vinegar, garlic and onions. It is then broiled and served sizzling with hot and sweet peppers.
Lamb Chops--Three chops that are cut extra thick, and served with fresh mint.
Stuffed Chicken Breast-An oven roasted free-range double chicken breast that is stuffed with garlic herb cheese and served with lemon butter.
Fresh Lobster--Fresh whole Maine lobster, and they range from 2.5 to 5 pounds. If possible, ask for a smaller one.
Market Fresh Seafood Selection-Daily specials, and if they have broiled or grilled fish, this is always a good SBD option.
Grilled Portobello Mushrooms--Marinated portobello mushrooms are served on garlic mashed potatoes, with grilled asparagus, broccoli, tomatoes and sizzling lemon butter.
Just ask for it without the potatoes.
Ahi-Tuna Stack--Seared rare tuna is topped with lump crabmeat and served sizzling with red pepper pesto.
Cold Water Lobster Tail-Served with blackening spice and topped with lemon and drizzled butter.
Vegetables that are served at Ruth's Chris and Acceptable Phase 1 side:
Sautéed Mushrooms--Sautéed with butter
Fresh Broccoli--Steamed au gratin, served in cheese sauce topped with melted sharp cheddar (ask for the cheese sauce to be omitted or served on the side)
Fresh Spinach--Sautéed with a hint of butter
Spinach Au Gratin--Creamed spinach topped with melted sharp cheddar. As with the broccoli, just ask for the cheese sauce on the side and use just a little.
Fresh Asparagus with hollandaise sauce.
Drinks and dessert
Best drink options, as always, are water, carbonated water (like club soda), diet sodas, or unsweetened iced tea. For dessert, your best bet is to have some coffee or tea and enjoy some sugar free gelatin or ricotta crème at home.
