Updated on November 30, 2012

My experience with natural remedies

All of us are sure to get some kind of cold, cough and fever during the winter season. I would recommend trying some of the Indian spices during this winter to treat your cold, cough, throat pain and fever. Knowing the Indian home remedies for fever, throat pain and cough would save you from going to doctor and taking medicines. There are several natural remedies for respiratory problems, throat pain and cold in India. Because of God’s grace I did not take any medicine till my 26th year of age, except for the vaccinations. Whenever I get a fever or cold, my mother would try some home remedies for me. It would give a relief. I would wish to share some of these remedies for you. Indian spices are secret behind the powerful Indian home remedies. Holy basil and neem leads the spices list. Precious spices from our forests come to our rescue whenever we become sick. We preserve the habitats of ayurvedic herbs. Medicinal herb forest like agasthyavanam is our real treasure. We have varieties of medicinal spices that offer true solution to different health issues. Our spices would equip your immune system to help you fight different health problems you encounter in winter season. We have special mix of spices that we call ottamooli. A single dose of this spice mix would cure the disease. Few such mix I share here.

Clove tea decoction, masala and oil

Boil water and add cloves and dry ginger to it. Drink it few times a day. Your throat infection and cold would be reduced. Cloves warm body and pushes out cold and chest congestion from your body. Use cloves in your vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. Make a black coffee with cloves added to it. Use of cloves at least three times a week would heal your body pain and joint pain in winter. Cloves are also used in Indian masala mix garam masala. In winter keep cloves in your kitchen and use it for your dishes. Clove is also good for gastric troubles you encounter in winter. Clove oil is externally applied for joint pains. Rubbing with clove oil would warm the muscles and joints and eliminate pain. Cloves are famous for its ability to raise body temperature. It is therefore very much recommended for winter season. Muscle cramps are very frequent in winter season. Keep a bottle of clove oil with you.

Dry ginger, honey and jaggery

Dry ginger – Dry ginger or chukka (in Malayalam) is a life saver for Indians for their cold, cough problems. Dry ginger is used in black coffee. A mix of ginger and honey is good for cough and cold. For kids you can add dry ginger with honey or jaggery (karipetti in Malayalam).

Cumin seed, ginger, honey drink

This is a wonder remedy for sore throat. Make a decoction of dry ginger and cumin seed (or fennel seed). Now add honey to it. You can have this decoction daily in ginger. This will keep you safe from cough, cold and fever in winter. For cough make a drink of dry ginger pieces, black pepper, garlic and cumin seeds.

Holy basil and honey

For children, take 4 leaves of tulsi (holy basil), take its extract (crush and take the juice) and mix it with jaggery. Children will be relived of cough. Tulsi is a wonderful home remedy for toddler cough. Basil leaf juice can also be mixed with honey. Giving this daily would cure even chronic cough problem. In your bathing water add few basil leaves.

Cinnamon and cardamom

Both these spices and be added to honey and consumed. It would raise body temperature and cure cough, cold, throat infection and fever. Cardamom is added to tea and coffee in India. Cardamom honey mix is found to be good for chest congestion and cold.

Guava leaves and adalodakam leaves – Adalodakam, the best remedy for cough

Leaves of guava plant and adalodakam are famous for its ability to cure cough, cold, throat pain and chest congestion. Make a decoction of these leaves and add a teaspoonful of honey to it. Having this for 3 days would cure your cold. Adalodakam leaves can be dried and preserved. Whenever you get a cough, take little bit of adalodakam powder and consume with honey. Honey is not essential here. It is just to hide the bitter taste of adalodakam. Adalodakam is the best natural remedy for cough. Even chronic cough would go away with this remedy.

Your all natural remedies are reminiscent of my ancestors - the Native Americans who successfully turned to Mother Nature for their cures. Another fine read.
