Fetal Growth From 8 to 40 Weeks

The Second trimester weeks will involve more active movement from the fetus, especially around the 18 to 22 week periods. The weight of fetus at the end of this trimester is normally around 1.5 pounds and its growth continues as its body skeleton is becoming more pronounced. A thin, nearly clear skin has formed, with its hands more developed, it begins a sucking reflux, many fine thin hair follicles are growing and a protective coating called vernix has formed to protect the skin. Eyelashes, eyebrows, fingernails and toenails have formed, as well as the fetus's hearing and swallowing abilities. At 24 weeks the baby is making blood cells, lungs are forming, and the baby is sleeping and waking.
