How to Add Humor to Your Life

Updated on October 21, 2013
Source

Stress weakens the immune system, leading to adverse effects on our health. Humor is one of the best ways to relieve stress, and can be easily added to our lives without a significant time or financial commitment.

Adverse Effects of Stress

Short-term stress can actually be beneficial in limited situations such as when competing in an athletic event, giving a work presentation, or during times of extreme danger. Stress causes hormones to be released that allow a person to either fight better or run faster from a threat. Such a response can enable a mother to lift a heavy object to save her children, or fight off a stronger attacker in times of fear. However, stress on a long-term term basis leads to very serious health issues and other detrimental effects such as:

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Increased risk of infection
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Decreased energy levels
  • Depression
  • Changes in appetite
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Decreased healing ability
  • Weakened immune system

Benefits of Humor and Stress Relief

Humor reduces the stress in your life. Reducing the stress in your life with humor will lead to a stronger immune system as well as these positive health benefits:

  • Reduction of chronic pain.
  • Improved mood due to the release of endorphins.
  • Improved ability to cope with unavoidable stress.
  • Increased creativity
  • Reduced depression and anxiety
  • Increased energy
  • A more optimistic outlook on life
  • Increased oxygen intake
  • Relaxation of the muscles

This is hilarious!

Tips to Add More Humor to Your Life

Everyone has their own definition of humor. Here are several ways to add more humor to your life:

  1. Go to a comedy club or simply watch a comedian on television.
  2. Watch a funny movie but make sure it meets your definition of humorous. Unlike the rest of the country I did not find Bridesmaids even remotely funny, so I had to find a movie that worked for me.
  3. Change your perspective and choose to see the humor in a situation rather than the frustration. For example, I was watching a movie in the family room with my kids and my son spilled his Chinese food everywhere, including all over the new leather couch. All of a sudden we started laughing and couldn't stop.
  4. When you are doing something you don't love like cleaning the house, try to think of something funny that happened in your recent or distant past. My mind sometimes returns to my college days, before my adult responsibilities kicked in.
  5. Play fun board games with your family.
  6. Read funny jokes online.
  7. Plan a night out with those friends that make you laugh. Avoid the negative people in your life.
  8. When you plan activities with your children find things you can also participate in rather than being an observer. Last winter I went sledding with my children rather than just watching them. I found myself laughing hysterically as I went speeding down the hill barely missing a huge rock.
  9. Attend a laughter yoga session.
  10. My husband says he adds humor by looking in the mirror every morning. That statement seemed funny to him, but I thought he was serious.

When you have a stressful situation try to find the humor in it. Take a few minutes every day and either think of something humorous that makes you smile or read a funny joke on the internet. You will find that this simple exercise will relieve stress and you will laugh more. Cheers to good health!!

Hey Ken! It really does feel so good to laugh! This one is actually fun to add to my goal to build a bionic immune system. How cool that your brother did a documentary which won an award and was nominated for another. I tried to check it out but the video was removed from Youtube. The babies are adorable and made me laugh. I agree that anything that induces laughter is worth it. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hope you are having an awesome weekend!

Dear Ms. Connecticut: It's a smart person who knows how important humor is to our health, well-being -- and very souls. My brother did a documentary on humor, Laugh A Day (Steve Taub, you can find parts of it on the Web), and it aired on PBS... Love those chattering twin infants, and laughing yoga classes (or anything that induces laughter). Kudos to you. Yours, Ken across the Sound

Hi innerspin! It is so interesting that people could be laughing hysterically at a movie and I'm feeling bored out of mind or I think of something and just start laughing and try to explain and my friend just stares at me. Those twins are adorable. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment!

I truly believe that humor keeps us happy and healthy. It also makes us more attractive. It is really important to be able to laugh at yourself, too. You really don't want to be one of those people who take themselves too seriously. So glad Rajan Jolly shared this. Otherwise I might have missed it. Good article, healthylife2!

Stress is the cause of a lot of health issues and humor does exactly the opposite. A humorous person has a lot of people around it is so infectious.

HealthyLife2, great hub! I always use humor to help relieve stress and "chill" out a stressful scene. You have to laugh off the pain and distress, it's kind of putting things in perspective. It can always be worse, it could be raining. Great article and excellent information!

Thanks so much for adding that Bill because I struggle a lot to make the necessary improvements to my health and deal every day with the emotional fallout. I so much relate to what you went through in my own way. All the things that used to be stressful don't even come close to dealing with a cancer diagnosis and might be inconveniences when dealing with them but will never make it into the stressful category again. Thanks so much for your support and good wishes!

Healthy, I have to add something....it is not easy....not at all. For me I had to change or die, and I did not want to die. One gains a certain perspective when faced with death like I was six years ago; suddenly, nothing else seems important enough to stress over.

Best wishes to you my friend!
