Richard Simmons grew up in the French Quarter of New Orleans. He was overweight; in fact, he says he was 268 pounds by the time he graduated high school. Richard often refers to that time in his life as a sad and lonely time. Each exercises DVD gives you a different workout and they’re all FUN, FUN, FUN! You won’t find any super models demonstrating the moves, these are real people with all different body types, many of which are quite heavy. Put on the DVD, turn up the volume and start movin’! Each song has a choreographed workout, which isn’t always easy to follow the first time through. There are no step-by-step instructions, guiding you through the dance moves, but it doesn’t take long before you’ve got the steps down and you’re dancing your way to fitness.These are weight loss exercises that you won't even realize you're doing!
I put these DVD’s on and exercise with my kids, we have a great time … laughing, dancing and sweatin’! Yes, we really are laughing and smiling as we workout; it’s FUN! I think one of the added benefits of this collection is that it keeps you coming back for more … if it’s fun and enjoyable, you’re certainly more likely to do it again. Nothing like built in motivation to help keep your exercise and weight loss program on track. You’re going to slim down, get more energy and have more FUN exercising than you ever dreamed possible.
If you are considering using any type of exercise equipment for your home workout, besides the exercise DVD programs, using a rebounder is amazingly fun and has a host of additional health benefits as well. It has been shown to improve bone mass, circulation, get rid of cellulite and improve lymphatic flow as well as burning fat and giving a good low-impact workout.
I’ve tried a lot of exercise DVD’s, most are much harder and more intense than the Sweatin’ to the Oldies Collection. I still use the other DVD’s, they certainly have their place in my workout routine, but I really enjoy the dancing and fun we have with this collection. I think the average non-athlete can make it through one of these workouts without too much difficulty. It will be challenging, but not impossible. The workouts all include nice warm-up, aerobic (fat burning), and cool-down segments. If you are looking for new ways on how to lose belly fat, this is it! Richard does stop periodically to have you check your heart rate, which he doesn’t really explain, so you’ll want to be prepared and know your target heart rate before you begin.
If you’re looking to maximize the
benefits of your workout, you’ll need to exercise within your target heart rate
(THR) zone. Generally, your THR is
60-80% of your maximum heart rate. The
easiest way to calculate your Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) is to subtract your age
from 220 (226 for women). Find your
training zone and multiply that number by your maximum heart rate. If you prefer, a heart rate monitor watch can make monitoring your heart rate much easier and they are very convenient and affordable.

Healthy Heart Zone (Warm up) – 50 – 60% of maximum heart rate. This is the easiest zone and probably the best zone for people who are just starting a fitness program. Working within this zone can help decrease body fat, blood pressure and cholesterol. It also has a low risk of injury. 85% of calories burned in this zone are fats!
Fitness Zone (Fat Burning) – 60 – 70% of maximum heart rate. This zone provides the same benefits as the healthy heart zone, but is more intense and burns more total calories. The percent of fat calories is still 85%.
