Updated on November 12, 2015

Swim Fitness Excels At Aerobic Exercise

Swim fitness is the ultimate exercise program for aerobic exercise!

Swim fitness includes a myriad of activities with the very pinnacle being full immersion swimming. The other forms of swim fitness are wonderful too! The variety of swim fitness exercise programs is great but all offer a great workout program. What can a swim fitness aerobic program do that other aerobic programs cannot do? Swim fitness excels at consistency.

People who choose water aerobics or full immersion swimming are dedicated and consistent. People who choose water aerobics, and/or full immersion swimming know their joints enjoys this exercise program. What they may not know is that their heart loves this exercise program. Find out why, read below:

Swim Fitness Excels At Aerobic Exercise

Water Aerobics is the Best Cardiovascular Exercise Program

Due to the hydrostatic pressure in the water, the heart rate, just the resting heart rate drops by 15-17 beats per minute. The water feels wonderful and your heart knows it feels wonderful. Your body loves the water because your largest muscle - the heart muscle loves the effect of the hydrostatic pressure.

Water Aerobics Excels at Aerobic Exercise

Aerobic exercise is with oxygen. Both full immersion swimming and water aerobics are great exercise programs that send oxygen into your blood stream.

Water aerobics does this oxygenation in an amazing manner - at the same time, this exercise program unlike most others is kind to your joints. But this high oxygen program doesn't stop there - it is also kind to your heart. Both your heart and your lungs love this exercise program - the very best cardiovascular exercise program ever!

Swim Fitness Excels at Consistency

The leavening power of a great fitness program is consistency. Find something you enjoy and keep at it daily. Swim fitness is loved by your body - her heart is happy, your joints are comfortable and your mind is surrounded by serenity of the magical qualities of water and sometimes beauty.

Swim Fitness Excels at Social Skills

Exercising with a friend helps you with the consistency and provides a much needed social element. Working out alone can be a chore, working out with a friend is simply fun with swim fitness!

Fitness = Exercise + Nutrition + Responsibility

The five components of fitness are:

3 Parts Exercise: Aerobic, Anaerobic and Stretching

1 Part Proper Nutrition

1 Part Responsibility - Consistency

Lacking even one ingredient can hurt your health.

The swimming pool offers the most wonderful and diverse levels of exercise available to mankind. Swim Fitness is really a pyramid of activity as the aboe poster showcases - from the widest spot - it is purely recreational where we expend little movement and simply seek rest and relaxation to the very top of the pyramid reserved for the elite - the full immersion swimmers and the esteemed Olympians such as Matt Biondi. Yes, most of us sadly use the term "swimming" when we are simply lounging by the swimming pool, however, there is a wonderful world of exercise which can be found right in the swimming pool!

Recreational Swimming

No fitness value. Only R & R.

Water Aerobics - Fantastic Aerobic Workout!

Great resistance training and cardiovascular training. May include group exercise programs, aqua jogging, aqua walking, etc...

Resistance Training / Water Calisthenics

Add the barbells or the EZ Swimmer to the water and you have a workout that is great for target toning.

Full Immersion Swimming - The Pinnacle in Aerobic Exercise!

The best of the best - fantastic resistance training and the highest level of aerobic exercise demanding oxygen to all of your body to pull you through the water.

Full immersion swimming is the best of the best. Statistics show that less than 3% of the populace can swim more than 2 pools lengths! And the King of "Swim Fitness", representing the very top of this pyramid of great exercises, is none other than the greatest Olympian male, the first to hold 11 medals, Matt Biondi.

The King of Swim Fitness - Matthew Nicholas Biondi - Winning 11 Olympian Medals

Biondi fame first began in 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, CA with the crescendo in 1988 in Seoul Korea Olympics by winning 5 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals for a lifetime total of 11 Olympian medals! And beyond the medals and recognition - he broke 4 world records! In the most elite aerobic exercise program of all - full immersion swimming!

What Makes Biondi The King of Swim Fitness

As a world record holder with 11 Olympian medals, one of the items attributed to his speed is not just his size, " 6 ft. 6-1/4 inch, 210 pound swimmer with a size 14 shoe and a "wingspan" equal to more than his height, " source:Matt Biondibut his strength and stretching. Like Torres, strength and size do not equate to speed alone. Excelling at the world hardest aerobic sport demands flexibility and strength.

"Matthew Nicholas Biondi (born October 8, 1965 in Palo Alto, California) is a three-time U.S. Olympic swimmer in the 1984, 1988, and 1992 Summer Olympics, winning a total of 11 medals. He is a member of the United States Olympic Hall of Fame and the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

In the 1988 Summer Olympics, Biondi equalled Mark Spitz as the second swimmer to win seven medals in one Games. Biondi left Seoul with five gold medals, setting world records in four of those events." source: wikipedia.com

Biondi holds a BA degree in Political Economy of Industrialized Societies (PEIS) from the University of California, Berkeley (1988) and a master's degree in teaching from Lewe and Clark College in Portand, Orgean.

Biondi and his wife Kirsten (formerly Metzger) reside in Hawaii. They have three children: sons Nathaniel (Nate), born in 1998, and Lucas, born in 2002; and daughter Makena, born in 2007.

Biondi is a math teacher at Parker School in Kamuela in Hawaii.

Dara Torres - Cinderella of Swim Fitness

Dara Torres

Cinderella of Swim Fitness - Dara Torres

If Matt Biondi is the King of Swim Fitness, being the most elite Olympian star in history decades before Phelps, Dara Torres is the Cinderella of Swim Fitness, a fairy tale come true and someone to inspire us all!

Oldest Female Olympic Swimmer - Shattering the Odds

Dara Torres is an inspiration for American women all over the world who are over 40 - yes, you heard me correctly - over 40!

While many of American females have taken up fitness after age 40, Dara Torres excelled at full immersion swimming, the most elite of all swim fitness activities and perhaps the most elite aerobic exercise.

In this video entitled "Dr. Sanjay Gupta reports on Dara Torres", we learn that resistance stretching helps Torres achieve the speed she needs to be the fastest swimmer in the world. Remember, our fitness recipe of 3 parts exercise - aerobic, strength and stretching - sound a little familiar?

Dara Torres' claim to fame began at the young age of 14, when she earned the maximum number of 28 NCAA All-American swimming awards. She also has the distinction of being the first US swimmer to compete in four Olympic Games! Her world records and nine Olympic medals include four golds!

Dara Torres also has a solid career as a TV commentator. In 1994 Torres was the first athlete to appear in Sports Illustrated!

In 2008 at the Beijing Olympics, she won 3 silver medals which denoted her 5th Olympic event! As a female over 40 and a mother, Dara Torres is the Cinderella story that anything is possible!

Cinderella Inspiration to All Females Over 40 Everywhere!

Dara Torres is a fairy tale inspiration for all of us over 40 - male and female alike!

      Judowolf,

You are a very wise man - water exercise is wise. I have read your hubs and you show great insights in the final chapters of life.

Sharing your experience is motivational. I still run into men who think swim fitness is only for the frail and aging and the water is the source of youth - for both mind, body and spirit.

Congratulations on the 100 mile club! What an achievement!

GmaGoldie, thank you for the well written article especially regarding full immersion swimming.I live in Florida and have been swimming for past 17 years. It took a long time to swim 5 meters, let alone a lap. Yesterday I joined the 100 mile club. Swimming is the best exercise I have ever done. The secret as you well put it is determination and discipline. It has helped me stay fit in all aspects of life- spiritually, physically, emotionally, psychologically, and sexually. I highly recommend it Thank you for this article.

While attending college as an adult student, I was swimming four days a week after classes. Loved it and lost a lot of weight, too. No pool where I am now, but walking is pretty good, too.
