Melanoma and Tanning Beds: What You Need To Know...

Melanoma, is the most serious type of skin cancer and it's dangerous. In fact, it's the most deadly form of skin cancer. It develops in your cells, the ones that make melanin, or the pigment which gives your skin its color. It usually develops due to over-exposure to sunlight (UV rays), although genetics do play a role.

Now there's some disturbing news about this cancer in relation to tanning beds, lamps and other devices. In a study, Lazovich et al. (2010), it was proved that those who tan indoors (and this could be tanning beds as well as tanning lamps, etc.) are 74% more likely to develop melanoma than those haven't tanned indoors.

This is devastating news!

Sunburns are dangerous and according to the study, sunburns are commonly reported due to indoor tanning.

Melanoma: A Cancer on the Rise!

According to the American Cancer Society, Melanoma has been on the rise for the past 30 years and that's not a good thing.

Some tanning-bed businesses say that their tanning beds are safer because they use shorter UBV waves, but the study proves that whether they're UBV, or UVA rays, the dangers remain the same. Another study, with this and additional findings, was published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.

Tanning Beds/Devices: Study Concludes Unsafe!

The study concluded that no type of tanning device was safe and that includes tanning beds, lamps, etc.

People that are particularly susceptible to melanoma are those who are fair skinned, have many moles, and/or are red-headed and have freckles.

For more information about melanoma please read this information from the Mayo Clinic: http://www.bing.com/health/article/mayo-MADS00439/Melanoma?q=melanoma&qpvt=melanoma

CAUTION: It's important for all of us to know the symptoms and signs of this deadly form of skin cancer, whether we use tanning devices or not! And it's a good idea to see your dermatologist regularly for screenings!
