What is Yoga?

Yoga has been rotating for thousands of years. Yoga is a physical practice that has started in India ,and is nowadays a very popular international activity. It has gained a lot of attention and attraction because it is both for fun and fitness. In sansikrit it means " Union,Gathering",so it gives the complete meaning that yoga is a union or gathering of the mind and the physical body.Yoga has many important features as being a system of physical exercises and postures called asanas.There physical exercises or asanas build flexibility,self esteem and strength.Another feature that lies under the meaning of yoga is called pranayama or breeting,which helps relax and refresh the body and mind.

This article describes about the teaching methods of yoga to children. Many people may not have heard that yoga is an activity for adults and children as well. Yoga is a basic factor that helps counter the stress experienced by young children living in this stressful atmosphere. We say stressful because ,we are focusing on the world of busy parents ,the influence of video games, competitive sports and the pressure that children get in school from homework, the study of heavy lessons and exams. So when children learn the techniques and features of yoga they can face life's challenges with more motivation. Teaching children how to take care of themselves is one way to show love. As with all forms of exercise,yoga practice can mean a good night's sleep.Yoga at this childhood stage encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that is noncompetitive.

There are few things to learn about taking children into practicing yoga. Just as little bodies and brains differ from the grown up ,children's reasons for coming to class may vary as well. Grown ups in yoga class want to be there ,because they are aware of the activity, but with children that is not always the case. Children need to discover the world on their own .One of the greatest challenges is to hold their attention ,because children in their nature are active; so to teach them the benefits of yoga is to teach them to learn how to be balanced, flexible, focused, peaceful, healthy and well being .Sound for instance is taught in yoga and it is a great exercise to release all the stress and anger.

Benefits of Yoga for children

1.Physically:it intensifies a child's flexibility ,strength, body awareness and coordination. Children exercise and play. These physical movements introduce kids to yoga's meaning which is union and honor for oneself in the delicate web of life.

2.Mentally: it improves and facilitates a child's concentration and calmness. In addition to the connection between the inner self and the connection with the natural world that surrounds them.When yogis developed the asanas years ago, they lived close to the natural world and used plants and animals for inspiration.

Dr. Howard Gardner's who is an author and professor of education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education ,wrote a theory of multiple intelligences ,where he describes eight intelligences:linguistic,visual,logical,musical,kinesthetic,naturalistic,intrapersonal, and interpersonal. He highlighted that children should be give the opportunity to embody and develop as many of these intelligences as possible. In keeping with this theory, children that practice yoga integrates games, music, storytelling language and arts into a complete curriculum that attracts the whole child. This is what helps children ,in their physical and mental development in a more advanced way.

Many schools are now teaching yoga to children and there are choices for after-school or weekend classes. It is not surprising that these schools are now willing enthusiastically to teach yoga as a way to calm down kids ,and to reduce the stress and the anxiety.The beauty of yoga is that children can practice with a friend or a group .A skillful sequence when teaching yoga ,is that teachers create lesson plans specifically for children. To keep kids engaged ,they may choose sometimes relevant games ,stories and songs as a fun way for kids to review poses they have learned in yoga lessons. As a conclusion ,it can be said that the practice of yoga teaches children to listen to their bodies by modifying and changing poses, to learn to be more aware about the need for balance in life and to learn to be still by listening with attention and make good decisions.
