Teenage Pregnancy – A Growing Socioeconomic Concern - Need More Awareness In Teen
I have seen lot of reports regarding the teenage pregnancy in the newspapers, magazines, article directories and blogs. It has been observed that a considerable number of teenager have been indulged in sex activities while reading in the junior school. Some of the unfortunate girls from these children become pregnant before the physical preparedness of being a mother. The result is abortion or teenage motherhood.
The cause of teenage pregnancy
The cause is diversified depending on the socioeconomic format of the country. In the developed countries it is due to indulgences in the unsafe consensual sex between a young couple and in the very rare case due to non consensual sex either due to pressure from the peer or a rape by another teenager or an adult.
But in the undeveloped or developing countries the causes of teen pregnancy are many. In most of such countries child marriage are either not illegal or it might be illegal but the law is not strictly enforced causing a lot of child marriages. The sex education are also absent or rarely present in this places. Therefore the couple’s sex life automatically become unprotected and most likely such girls are having their first babies within a year.
Another reason of teenage pregnancy in these countries is indulgence of sexual activities between teenager girls with an adult person. Unlike in developed countries premarital sex is illegal and socially unacceptable in these countries. As sex is a natural phenomenon of living animal imposed by the nature itself for its own existence of the creation, every youth feels irresistible sexual urges during adolescence. Therefore the teenage children, who are not socially permitted for sex, might fall in unusual relationship with much elder person and become the victim of illegal pregnancy.
The effect of the teenage motherhood
The effects of teenage motherhood are manifold. First let us talk about the mother. Although it is not much risky for the mother in the developed countries but it might risk the mother and child in case of developing or undeveloped countries due to lake of nutritious food and improper or no medical assistance. Abortion is also illegal for unmarried girls in some of the countries and due to social rejection they are not allowed to carry the pregnancy also. This forces them to go to illegal abortion center and risk their as well as their baby’s life. In some cases these girls ultimately cause suicide or take shelter in brothels.
In case the mother is allowed to give birth to the baby it would be difficult for her to look after it. A teenage mother does not have the maturity which is required to bring up a child. It is also said that the affectionate feeling in such mothers are not developed properly and the baby might be deprived of the motherly affection and love causing a long term effect in such child.
The social concern
The social concern of teen age motherhood is increase in the abandoned children. Sometimes the teenage mother who could not have an abortion and knowing that the child would not be accepted by the society, secretly carry the child and put them in the lobby of some orphanage hone or even sometimes keep them abandoned in the street. In most of the undeveloped and developing countries, these children grown up in unhealthy and unsocial environment and become the threat for the entire society.
How to prevent teenage pregnancy?
This is a difficult question to be answered by any of the political or sociology expert. Since prehistoric period the society is facing this question and yet no proper solution has come up. Some social experts argue that proper sex education at the early adolescence period could prevent teenage pregnancy but others are against this theory telling that this would increase sexual indulgence among immature children.
It is found that there are three most commonly used theories are being followed by the sex educationist to fight against teenage pregnancy.
This theory encourages teenagers to keep themselves away from sex till they are prepared to become responsible mother or father physically, socially and economically. But this theory does not seem to be effective due to lake of motivation and proper physical and mental exercise to control the sexual urges.
This theory encourages teenagers to avoid sexual activities during their education but at the same time educate them regarding use of contraceptives and sexual diseases to make them capable of having safe sex if unavoidable. Some social experts say that the children educated in this theory mostly choose the second option.
Sex education only theory
This theory is nothing but the Abstinence-plus theory except the Abstinence part of it.
There is no controversy regarding the ill effect of teenage pregnancy among the different groups of sociologist and other social reformers. The only question is how to stop it! In different countries different action plans have been made to fight against the growing tendency of this unwanted situation. Sex education of course is a must; the question is when to start it. Some religious and moral education to improve the self control among teenage children might also be helpful. Parental concern is another vital area which should also be given adequate importance.
Let’s think about this concern together and share our findings among ourselves; who knows that a more appropriate idea would not come up through us!
