How to be satisfied with your work? Ten effective steps

Updated on November 10, 2013

'The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.'- Vince Lombardi

How many of you like your work and feel you can achieve success in it?

I am sure only a handful will lift their hands.

Why are the majority not at all satisfied with their work?

Lot of factors contribute to the reason for not liking your work. But unless you like your work, each and every day is an agonizing experience and can cause tension and stress.

Let us see how you can make your work place a happy place.

Most of us do not know the importance of punctuality. When you are in time for work, it sends signal to the management that you are sincere in your work and you are viewed as a reliable and efficient person. You feel relaxed as you do not have to cringe before your glowering higher officials and explain sheepishly the reason for your late arrival.

Get up early in the morning so that you need not lag behind in time and also start a little early for work so that any traffic jam, or late arrival of transportation does not in any way affect your 'in time'.

2.Amiable relationship with your colleagues.

The atmosphere in your work becomes scorching hot when you cannot get along with your colleagues. If you are aloof with your colleagues, you will be left out and this makes you feel alone and lost. You should get along fine with your colleagues and you should not take everything they do or say too much to your heart. When you lend a helping hand, you too will receive one in your time of need.

3.Say 'NO'

Happiness in your work also depends on your ability to say 'no' to the unwanted work thrust on you. When you want to please your colleagues, you are unable to say 'no' when they ask you to share some of their work. If you are meek and submissive, many will be only ready to thrust their work on you and in the process your work will suffer.

You should firmly say that you too have work to do and will help when you have free time. Leave it at that and do not barge on that subject with your colleagues. It is a cool signal to them that you are not a person to be taken for granted

4.Improve your knowledge.

Do you freeze in your incapacity to do your work with efficiency? It is because knowledge about your work is not sufficient for you to be proficient. No one is born intelligent and you too can improve knowledge if you concentrate sincerely in your work. Discuss your work with a friendly colleague and learn the know-how of how to make you work efficient.

5.Be enthusiastic

Have you seen a child and how happy he always is?It is because of his enthusiasm in his way of looking at things. Everything is new to him and he is curious about whatever he sees and does. You too should be enthusiastic and eager in your work.

6.Do not allow to be bullied

A bully can torture your work atmosphere and if you allow to be crushed by the bully, you are not going to be happy in your work. A bully actually seeks a meek person to show his weight as he knows that an assertive person will never let him fluster him. Be absolutely firm in dealing with the bullying colleague and you will be amazed to see the bully side step you as he is nonplussed by your assertiveness.

7.Like your work

When you do not like your work, you do not give your best to it. It is sad because all work has its plus and minus. If you take the minus seriously, your performance will be lackluster, but if you concentrate on the plus, you give your best to make you successful in the long run.

8.Jolly time together

My daughter is a software professional and so her work is always heavy and full of stress. She has to deal with lot of issues and sometimes she says she feels tensed. She has an excellent team relationship with her colleagues and their way of relaxing is to eat out. They plan an outing and spend fun time making a light weather of their serious work problems. She says it relieves her tension in an effective way. Try it out and see whether it works for you.

9.Look towards a bright future.

Do not have a negative attitude towards your work.

' I will not succeed'

'This work is hopeless'

These sort of pessimistic outlook towards your work weakens your spirit and your work suffers. Be confident that you will achieve success and this optimistic inclination will make you concentrate on your work and your sustained hard work will definitely pay.

10. Good family life

You might wonder what good family life has got to do with your happiness in work. Happiness in family life and happiness in work are co-related and cannot be separated. When you have good family relationship you feel relaxed and you are able to concentrate in your work.If you do not have good family life you carry the tension to your work place and your work suffers.

'Work is love made visible. And if you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms of those who work with joy.' - Khalil Gibran

Happiness in your work is all in your mind and when your mind has clarity, you give your full potential to your work.Always feed your mind with positive thoughts about your work and your positive thoughts will make you work positively and when you work positively, you get positive feedback and this positive feedback snowballs to become success in your work.

Another one would be appreciate that you actually have a job. Not all people are so lucky. Especially with todays economic droughts. I wrote my first hub about being the key to your success. And it goes with this hub. Because happiness in your work environment causes for better thoughts, and better thoughts will get you the goals you want and the success you are wanting to achieve. Great hub :)

This is a holistic approach to life and work, which always works much better than looking at one area of life in isolation. A good balance, give and take, and good boundaries, I like the point you make about being able to say 'No' !

So many important points you make here. I find that punctuality is vital for the rest of these to be accomplished. There is nothing worse than being late and then having to overcome the associated anxiety from having done so.

      Great hub!

      My regards,
