The 4 Steps to a Healthier You

Updated on January 29, 2015

You probably work five days a week, maybe even more. Especially if you have your own family with kids in the house, work doesn’t really end. As a result, you probably might start to notice that your health is not as good as before. You get tired easily. You start to gain weight. But did you know it doesn’t really take too much for you to stay healthy?

Let me share with you the four essential steps to achieving overall wellbeing. You might be surprised it is actually very easy to follow.

Step 1: Get On a Healthy Diet

This is the most important thing of all. You need to eat the right kind of food every single day. In our daily work lives, where we usually rush from getting up in the morning to going to the office, we often forget to eat healthy stuff. For breakfast, you’d probably go to a fast-food drive-thru and get a burger, fries, and a soda or coffee. Obviously that is not a good thing to do day in and day out. But you try to justify it thinking it is important that you were able to save extra time for work because you didn’t prepare your own breakfast. Now, that is one bad habit you need to break.

So how can you eat right?

  • Eat home-cooked meals. Because these are healthier and safer.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables than red meat.
  • If you’re going to eat meat, choose fish or chicken.
  • Instead of using too much salt, experiment with seasoning your dishes using herbs and spices.
  • When you go shopping in a supermarket, always have a list of the things you need to buy and stick to that list. Avoid the snack food aisles.
  • Drink only water and fruit juices. No sodas.

Step 2: Exercise Regularly

It doesn’t matter which time of the day you are free to exercise, the important thing is you do it. You can exercise early in the morning, which is ideal because the sun’s not yet up so it’s still a bit cold; you’ll be more comfortable. You may also exercise after work, when you have no other important tasks to do.

You don’t need to buy expensive exercise machines or even join a gym. Most doctors agree that even walking for 30 minutes to an hour each day will be beneficial to your health. All you need are comfortable clothes and a good pair of shoes.

Step 3: Get Enough Rest

If all you do is work then eventually you will get burned out. You’ll crash. That is why it is important that you get enough rest. Make sure you sleep well every night. The ideal number of hours of sleep is 8 but not all people are the same. If you feel refreshed after just 5 hours of sleep, then that’s good already.

When you really feel stressed from your job, then take a vacation. Not a two-day leave, but go on a week long vacation so you can recharge your mind and body.

Step 4: Get Regular Check Ups

Lastly, you have to visit your doctor at least once a year to get health check ups. This also includes a visit to your dentist to make sure your teeth are in good form and you have no gum problems. These check ups will help ease your mind knowing that you have a healthy body, and just in case, help prevent any serious disease.

Stay Healthy

Getting in shape and a great overall wellbeing require determination and perseverance. You may need to go through a lifestyle change but the benefits to your health and life will be beyond measure.
