The Best Home Remedies for Thinning Hair

Updated on August 22, 2012

Thinning hair is as undesirable as it is inevitable. Hair thins out with age and hair loss occurs, Male pattern baldness is one of the end results of thinning hair.

There is a lot you can do to slow down the rate at which your hair thins, and I have collected a number of home remedies for thinning hair below.

A word of caution first - Rule out medical reasons for the thinning hair before you resort to home remedies. Conditions such as anemia and thyroid disorders could cause hair loss. Some medications for diabetes, heart diseases as well as hormonal drugs like HRT or contraceptives could have some effects on your hair volume and texture.

Home remedies for thinning hair

Although there is no guarantee that using these home remedies will lead to a full head of thick glossy hair, they are worth a try as they are neither expensive nor dangerous.

Dandruff and Thinning Hair

Dandruff and other conditions of the scalp could result in accelerated thinning of the hair and hair loss.

There are several home remedies for dandruff

  • Treat with baking soda. Stop at any time if you feel any irritation. This dries out the scalp and the rough baking soda grains slough out dead cells and promote healthy hair growth reflected in thicker hair. Leave the baking soda in the hair for at least 6 hours then wash off.
  • If your scalp dries out easily, give it an olive oil sauna once a month. It will reduce dandruff and thicken your hair. Apply oilve oil liberally to the scalp, use a drier set on medium heat for 10 minutes. Cover with a shower cap for another hour and wash off. Better try this home remedy at night and wash the oil off the next morning.

Capsicum and hair

Capsicum found in red peppers helps with hair growth and thickening.

Boil a handfull of peppers (8-10) in three cups of water for 30 minutes.

Use red bell peppers as they contain more capsicum. Wash your hair with this fluid at least once a week.

Onions and hair growth

Onions promote the growth of hair. Cut an onion in slices.

Rub the scalp with the onion, leave it on for 30 minutes and rinse off.

Hairstyles that cause hair damage

If your hair has already started thinning out, you should avoid hairstyles that aggravate hair loss.

Avoid tight weaves and braids especially those that pull at the hairs on the hairline.

Create bangs in front of the forehead and hairline to over up the thinning hair.

Another option is to dye your hair to a colour closer to your skin color. It makes the scalp underneath the hair less marked, providing some sort of cover up.

Larry Wall is funny but he's right. Women can do more with thinning hair that men. Of course there is always the pricy hair replacement techniques. That's where they rush you in, get your money and rush you out. There are plenty of prescription drugs that thin and break the hair. By the time you figure out that it was the drug, the damage has been done but you have to fight fire with fire. Get the drug changed by the physician to another drug. Most times we do not research drugs before using them. Many drugs causes hair loss, thinning and breaking. I have learned to research any drug before using it and I also read the information sheet that the druggist attach.

My picture is a few years old--I look a little less distinctive with my smaller amount of hair. I keep trying to get the hair salons to charge be the child's rate, but the best they do is give me the senior's discount.

While it may be true that thinning is inevitable, not everyone finds it easy to accept it. Tempoaray relief using home remedies to give an appearance of thicker hair is desirable. Thanks for your kind comments.

You look very distinctive with your hair.

Despite your interesting suggestions, I really do not think there is any home remedy to stop thinning hair. Being one of the masses that has hair that is not only thinning, but disappearing as we speak, I think if there was an effective home remedy, it would be marketed by now to the older generations. It is kind of like a cure for the common cold--take these pills, get plenty of liquids and bed rest and in seven to ten days your cold should be gone. The cold would be gone in seven to 10 days no matter what you do. You can relieve the symptoms but not cure the cold. Some of the suggestions might give the appearance of thicker hair for a while, but eventually, the hairline, if so inclined, is going to retreat. Men should just accept it. Women can do more things with their hair than men, and wigs are easier to manage than toupees. It is a genetic trait in my family. Oddly enough, my son, who is adopted, has a "thinning" hairline. I am glad you used the word thinning. Sounds better than receding or balding.

Interesting. As we age and stress becomes part of life indeed hair thinning is prone to happen. Interesting sugg. I also found "viviscal" a supplement sort of pricey works as well.
