The Best Ways to Treat Winter Bugs

Updated on December 27, 2010

Winter bugs are rife at this time of year, with coughs, colds, sore throats and the flu virus being particularly nasty. Shop-bought over-the-counter remedies tend to just dull the symptoms through painkilling ingredients rather than actively fighting against them. While this can provide some welcome relief from the discomfort, is there a better solution that you can turn to for a quicker recovery?

Natural Remedies

Honey & Lemon

The benefits: Honey has antibacterial properties so it's a good choice to add to a hot drink. Lemon is also highly recommended for colds & flu bouts thanks to its healing properties.

Best for: Sore throats

Ginger

The benefits: Ginger has a warming effect and when added to hot water, it can help to reduce mucus build-up to unblock your sinuses.

Best for: Clearing your sinuses

Garlic

The benefits: Garlic has antimicrobial and antiviral properties. Adding a touch to a warming soup can help to get over a cold.

Best for: colds

Vitamins & Minerals

Increasing your intake of vitamins and minerals is essential when you're feeling run down. Antioxidants are particularly important as they can help to fight the cold or virus.
