The Black Sheep and the Over-Achiever: I Really Don’t Know Love

Updated on February 24, 2016

.

"The black sheep is despised by society.

The over-achiever is admired by everyone. Envied."

.

The bad news is that there is a black sheep as well as an over-achiever in each one of us.

The good news is that it’s neither good nor bad.

.

.

The melody and words of a song from childhood memories floated into a thinking thought during early morning silent sitting, before reading the morning paper.

The words as recalled from childhood were: boughs and ploughs of angel’s hair … feathered canons. Ha.

When I checked the lyrics of the song, “Both Sides Now”from the www, ‘boughs’ is actually ‘rows’, ‘ploughs’ is actually ‘flows’, feathered is ok and ‘canons,’ canyons.

.

Funny how we can perceive something else of the same thing when coming from a different place, a different context.

.

Perhaps this is why Thomas Moore posited that some of our childhood memories can actually be childhood myths. He is also the one who mentioned that Jung equates the unconscious with the soul.

.

I honor my dreams, songs I hear and silent sitting thoughts. They provide me with key phrases that I feel are a communication, a personal message from my soul. So I look up the dream dictionary at hyperdictionary.com for the symbolisms of the lyrics as recalled from childhood:

.

Boughs. Not found in the dictionary. To take ‘bow,’ which may also have been the child’s recall based on hearing the phonetics: “Bowing represents respect. You are acknowledging a greater and larger power. Dreaming of an archer's bow, refers to the pursuit and accomplishment of your goals.”

Plough. “Seeing a plough in your dream, represents growth, expansion and the cultivation of new ideas and projects.”

Angel “Dreaming of angels will have a profound impact on your life. Holy, pure, divine, they are trying to convey an important message to you: they might bring more spirituality, joy, and peace to your life, if you have a clear consciousness. If it is not the case, they might remind you that it is time for you to think about your choices and actions, do you need to make things better? Three angels have a great symbolic signigication [sic], try to listen to their message, it must have a holy dimension to it.”

… Hair. “Seeing hair in your dream ***means sexual virility, seduction, sensuality, vanity, and health. It is indicative of your attitudes.

… Dreaming that you are reaching for someone's hair, suggests that you are trying to connect with that person on a spiritual or intellectual level. It also refers to sympathy, protectiveness, and fraternal love.

… Dreaming that the wind is blowing through your hair means ***freedom to express uninhibited feelings. You are "letting your hair down". Dreaming that your hair is white or turns white indicates that something important has just been made aware to you. It is a symbol of wisdom and insight.”

Feather. “Dreaming of feathers floating in the air means a life of ease, comfort, warmth and of financial gains. It may describe your lightheartedness and enjoyment for life. Alternatively, they may represent confusion, hastiness, and lost of dignity. In particular, seeing chicken feathers in your dream means of minor annoyances. Eagle feathers represent the realization of your goals and aspirations. And to see peacock, ostrich, or any other ornamental feathers indicates advancement up the social ladder. You will be met with much success in your future. Dreaming that you are selling or buying feathers, symbolizes frugality and thriftiness.”

Canons. “Seeing a cannon in your dream, suggests that there is something drastic that needs to be done immediately.”

I Really Don’t Know Love: The Black Sheep and the Over-Achiever

.

I recall having been asked by a former manager of mine what my birth order was so he concluded I would either be a black sheep or an over-achiever. “Which one?” he asked.

.

In the beginning, it seems to be an unconscious choice.

.

We are driven by the things we feel will earn others’ approval … we become over-achievers.

We feel no matter what we do, it’s not good enough … we become the black sheep.

.

Which one? There is no right or wrong answer, it’s been said. Just do it. Do what the circumstances or situation calls for. Perhaps the unaware black sheep is the message; the situation is calling humanity’s attention to something wrong in the system.

.

Among us, who are the black sheep? Who are the over-achievers? We should not allow ourselves to be branded like cattle this either-or way.

.

We are black sheep and over-achievers both at the same time. At times, doing ‘wrong’ to get noticed; at times getting our share of shining moments. But in truth, we are neither black sheep or over-achievers. Just humans being.

.

Madonna’s popularity can be accounted for the shadow side (i.e., black sheep) of ourselves that need to be acknowledged. Through arts or appreciation of the arts our inhibitions can be expressed without doing harm to self or others.

.

Does the black sheep or the over-achiever really know love?

.

I don’t think so. But that’s just an honest opinion to not think so. As much as there are aware black sheep, there are aware over-achievers.

.

.

.

But looking back, ‘cruel,’ ‘unloving’ or challenging circumstances can teach one not to look for love from the outside. Where truly it cannot be found.

.

Challenging circumstances can be seen as the hands of a loving and compassionate Divine Order.

.

The black sheep can succeed or succeed in a karmic role of teaching others to help him succeed.

.

The over-achiever can fail and thus succeed in finding who those others are who only ‘loved’ one for one’s accomplishments.

.

Life is a mystery. Let’s not ourselves be branded into right or wrong.

WithIn, the I AM knows simply being is worth living for.

.

“Love, is above wisdom, just as the Virgin is above the snake.

For her everything is inspiration.

She doesn’t bother judging what is good and evil.”

- Paulo Coelho

Ebony and Ivory

.

“There is good and bad in everyone.

Ebony and ivory.

Live together in perfect harmony,

Side by side on my piano keyboard,

Why don’t we?”

- by Paul McCartney

.

There is good and bad in everyone. No one is exempt.

.

Judge not the other because what you see is a mirror of yourself. Use your mirror and appreciate your neighbor’s ‘difficult behavior’ as food for self-discernment.

.

We all have our thinking minds and our spirit guides to help us learn acceptance of both our good and bad and those of our neighbors’.

.

Once we have decided to align our goals with our soul’s goal, our individual spirit guide will assist us in discerning the Divine Will in contrast to that of our ego self.

.

*Observing the ego in self and others, watching it without judgment, eventually brings us to the place where we no longer invest emotional energy into its urges but objectively, peacefully see it as the ego and not your True Self. This is the place where you find the wellspring of purity and perfection.

Tribute to Artists, Musicians and Dreams

.

This is just to mention in passing that it is an inherent need or tool for our spiritual development, which is what we came here on Earth for, for us to respect artists, musicians and our dreams/insights. Respecting and appreciating artists and dreams we obtain important messages that may be embedded behind the façade of something that seemed so simple as a song, such as “Both Sides Now” by Joni Mitchell.

Abstract arts of a century ago has been able to predict the social climate of the future.

*De Mello: “Awareness”

Today's headline news as previewed by the 'dream' symbols:

**Cannons – may be symbolic of the 1986 people power: Philippines’s gift to the world (i.e., commemorated today nationwide) in EDSA that toppled the decades-old dictatorship in the Philippines.

***Hair – may be symbolic of Madonna’s ongoing concert and its being protested by a bishop despite the artist’s popular acceptance by the general population.
