The Fatal Plan B Birth Control Decision
For years the FDA refused to allow the birth control medication, Plan B, to be sold to minors under 18. In 2007 or so, the age was dropped to 17.
Now, a Federal Court judge has made the idiotic ruling that Plan B should be made available to any child bearing age girl or woman over the counter without parental permission, if under 17. The Obama administration, while liberal, was caught off guard and is angry about the ruling and will appeal. The judge indicated that Obama's decision not to allow any age to get the drug, a political one. It said the decision is arbitrary about the age.
Any parent with a teen girl under 17 has the parental right to know if their daughter is sexually active and if they become pregnant, approve of obtaining this Plan B medication to abort it. But, the child should NOT be able to obtain it without the parent's permission or without some notification to them. Currently, those under 17 must get a prescription from their doctor. This is reasonable because the parents would know.
Making it available over the counter, next to condoms and candy, is making it too easy. There is no medical advice given about the drug except what is on the package. Obama, himself, has two daughters who could become pregnant and use Plan B to avoid parental detection. I am sure, as any parent would, they would insist on knowing. The problem is it encourages girls\teens to be more cavalier and not use more reliable birth control.
Doctors are split with the decision. The pill is much stronger than the normal birth control pill and has stronger side effects because it is for "emergency" situations.
