1,000metres of Courage, Motivation and Inspiration

In a remote mountainous region of Hefeng county, southeast of Hubei province in China, the villagers in Yushan Village have been travelling in what they like to call an "iron basket".

The “iron basket” is suspended from a zipline, fashioned from thick cables that stretches more than 1,000m and over 480m above the valley floor and run by a simple diesel engine.

The “iron basket”, constructed in 1997, serve as the only means of transport in and out of their village for more than 16 years. There are no roads nearby and takes at least a full day to travel up and down the mountains from the village.

Without the “iron basket”, the locals' journey would otherwise take many days on foot just to get to the nearest county town, which lies more than 150km away from their village.

Everyday, locals, young and old, transport themselves to and from the mountains by hanging gingerly over 480m in a small basket.

For more than 16 years, the “iron basket” has safely transported the villagers across the mountains and there are no reported accidents.

Yet their struggles relate a lot to the pursuit of our goals.

Reaching to the nearest town by hanging gingerly over 480m in a small basket and balancing on a small platform were huge obstacles.

We all have to overcome obstacles to achieve our goals. At times, these obstacles can often seem insurmountable, but with enough perseverance we can overcome them.

Don't Stop Striving

The biggest takeaway to this story is that we must the courage and perseverance to strive for our goals.

How often did the villages stop in front of the “iron basket” and wonder if the contraption will bring them across the mountains safely?

All of us face that moment too during the pursuit of our goals. We stop to look around and we see no encouraging signs.

Very often, there will be nothing and no one to encourage us. And that's okay.

But we must not feel like we that we are working towards something that will never arrive.

Their efforts are testimony that whatever we want to achieve in our lives is ours for the making. Despite facing overwhelming challenges, we can achieve our goals if our hearts desires the goals enough.

Trying and failing is not a failure. Not trying is.

A great article! Indeed, during the pursuit of our goals, we sometimes stop to look around and we don't see any encouraging signs. We all need courage and persistence to carry on. Inspiring! :)

I deeply admire the villagers' courage and tenacity in overcoming the obstacles they face. And I absolutely think that I can learn from their attitude.

I suppose that there are geographical and cost constraints. Low traffic and steep slopes can often wash away or flood the roads. A high cost will be incurred to regularly repair the roads. However, China needs to understand that roads are immensely important for transportation and to lift rural poverty - but that is another issue altogether.
