.The Secret to a Healthy Life
Everyone wants to have ahealthy life. No one wants their health to deteriorates because without good healthyou cannot enjoy the beauty of life or accomplish your goals in life. People want to wake up every day with a new burst of energy and zest to take on the challenges of that day.If our objective is to have a healthy life, then, why is it so hard for most people to discipline themselves to practise and maintain those activities which will lead to a quality and healthy life? There is a secret to living a healthy life, and, I think that secret is based on a principle that is found in the scriptures: “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” ( 1 Corinthians 6:19).
God is very wise to instruct us in His Word that our bodies is His temple, and therefore, not our own to do as we please. 1 Corinthians 6: 19 is calling us to a change in our mind set. We are all called to have the mind set of a caretaker. The Oxford dictionary defines a caretaker as, “a person who is employed to look after a house, building, etc” Therefore, we are simply left in charge of our bodies for a certain period of time. The owner (God) will return to take possession at some point in time. The question then, is what is our responsibility? I think our responsibility is to take the best care we possible can, of our bodies.
How do we take care of our bodies? Man is considered to have spiritual, physical, emotional, and social needs. These needs must be met in a balanced way if we are going to be healthy. If for instance, the physical needs are met but the others are neglected, then that results in an unhealthy life. The same holds true for the other needs. One cannot be met at the expense of the other! There must be a balance about how we go about satisfying these needs.
- Physical Needs
Let’s look at how we take care of our physical needs. Eating the right kinds of foods is certainly a good start! Making sure to include the six food groups when you are having your meals. The six food groups are: vegetables. Fruits, grains, proteins, dairy, and fats. Our bodies need daily exercise so that our organs and tissues can function properly. It is also very important for us to receive proper sleep. The average daily recommendation for a healthy lifestyle is about8 hours of sleepper day.
2. Spiritual Needs
Your spiritual needs are met by establishing a vertical, personal relationship with God your Creator. Reading the Bible and praying to God is a first step in this important journey. As well as fellowshipping with others of like faith will help to encourage and strengthen your faith.
3. Emotional Needs
Emotional needs are met by filling your thoughts with positive and good thoughts. The way you treat your fellow brothers and sisters will definitely feed your emotions for better or worse. Additionally, developing healthy relationshipswith our spouses, sibblings, relatives, co-workers, and friends will go a long way to help you to be healthy emotionally.
4. Social Needs
Finally, your social needs are met by developing healthy interpersonal relationships with others. Again, this may include your workplace, neighbourhood, and friends. Being part of social and community clubs are good ways to feed your social needs.
I believe that the secret to a healthy life lies in the fact that God is the one who owns us, and therefore He requires us to take the best care where possible of our bodies; making sure to keep a good balance in the way we satisfy the different needs of our bodies. So, what is the secret to living a healthy life? It is to believe and practice the principle of the scripture in 1 Corinthians 6:19. “Your body belongs to God, and it is not yours to do as you please!”
