Life is Now!

Updated on January 12, 2015

(The photo above, is of a man who had one month to live. He lived that month fully, with great humor and acceptance) . He understood the simple truth of living.

Many of us struggle through life by becoming dutiful automatons - going to work, rearing children, longing for something different, but not aware that we can change our reality if we change our minds.

So many times the lost find solace in routine, addiction, giving power (and choice ) away to something or someone external. We join, or opt out of, the race for financial security, we give up our autonomy and contentment, in the endless struggle for more.

The perceived person or thing who has power over you may be a boss, a government, a politician, a spouse, your neighbor, a lover or even your possessions and their acquisition.

The Dahlia Lama was once asked what surprised him most about humanity, he answered: “Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

How true this is for so many of us. But how do we change when we fear change so much? We change, by a commitment to self-love, and by waking up from "the long sleep of ignorance."

Health, prosperity, well-being, contentment, acceptance and peace are all within our grasp, but cannot be found outside of ourselves. These desirable states of mind are choices we can all make, regardless of our circumstance... the trouble is, we forget we have a choice.

We can either continue to be trapped and miserable (a product of circumstance, birth, limitations, negativity etc .) or, we can chose to change our life, by designing our internal world to work in harmony with the external world.

How do we do this?: By becoming educated and conscious of how powerful our thoughts and feelings are. Blaming and judging anyone or anything will keep you stuck and get you more of the same.

As you begin to learn more about looking after yourself and your soul, you will realize you always had choice, you just got ''caught up '' and forgot. You are far more than your ego which always feels hungry, inadequate, competitive, fearful and trapped. You are able to feel great joy, gratitude and contentment right now, if you alter your mindset.

As you change your internal landscape, this will reflect externally. If you want movement and change; change your feelings and your thoughts and love yourself exactly as you are right now.

As the Dahlia Lama pointed out, what we are running away from, is truly living in and enjoying each day! A simple choice to love and accept yourself, to free up your mind from resentments, self-pity, doubts and fears will help you see more clearly. Feeling good about you NOW, regardless of the circumstances you are in, will bring about the joy and miracles you are seeking. Sounds too simple? Life was never meant to be a rat-race.

No matter how you are feeling or what your life circumstance is, accept yourself and your current situation. Don't squander your potential for joy with more of yesterday’s misery. Awareness frees us all. An awakening is necessary. (Don’t wait for illness or loss before you “wake up. ”)

An awakening can come from something you read, or something someone says...or comes as a sudden realization. That's when we make a quantum leap within. Don't beat yourself up for the time it took you to "re-cognize" the simple truth. Life is as good as your thoughts and feelings about yourself, which translates to how others relate to you.

When you love yourself and value yourself and are kind and forgiving with yourself, the external world follows. Joy, love, happiness, contentment and peace of mind will be reflected back to you in the eyes of others and through your life experiences.

Imagine you are an artist and you had a brand new canvas each day, and each day you are covering that white page (full of potential ) with the same dull picture as yesterday and the same negative inner dialogue about yourself. Nothing new and beautiful can come from more of the same.

It feels weird to try on a new attitude; but it’s amazing how quickly this will become your new reality. Change your views of yourself if you want change! It’s a quiet internal decision; not a loud declaration. It’s a simple gratitude for the experience of life, and the opportunity you’ve been given within each and every life circumstance.

Life is your gift. Live it; with contentment and acceptance, live fearlessly and fully. Love and accept yourself and just watch the miracles happen in your life!

I have to thank you for sharing the quote from Dalai Lama. It is quite disturbing how our lifestyle and excellence-oriented culture make us live unhealthy lives. It is also odd how difficult it is to strike balance between work and family. Hopefully, more and more people would read your hub and be enlightened about the need to live an almost stress-free life that benefits our health and sanity. Voting your hub up!

Beautiful, thoughtful hub, brightforyou, which exactly fits my philosophy, too, from an old quote: Yesterday is history, tomorrow is unknown. Today is a gift. Tht's why it's called the present. So true.
