The South Beach Diet : How Does It Work ?
The South Beach Diet is developed by a cardiologist namedArthur Agatston, M.D., director of Mount Sinai Cardiac Prevention Center. This diet was developed with the goal of promoting weight loss without compromising the health of the heart.South Beach Diet tries to keep saturated fats in check by favoring lean protein sources such as fish and chicken over bacon, cheeseburgers, and steak.
How Does It Work ?
The South Beach Diet consists of three phases. During phase one, carbohydrates are decreased dramatically in an effort to limit cravings. This phase lasts for two weeks.Fruits are not allowed during this phase because fruits has high carbohydrate contents. According to Dr. Agatston,as written in his 2003 bookentitled The South beach Diet; “…. Most obesity is simple. The faster the sugar and starches you eatare processedand absorbed into your bloodstream, the fatter you get.”
The second phase keeps blood sugar in check by adding a limited amount of “good carbohydrates.”Good carbohydrates include those foods that are slowly digested such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables. These foods are ranked according to their Glycemic Index.Glycemic Index measures the amount of glucose released into the body two hours after eating. Foods with a lower Glycemic Indexthose that release sugar more slowly are favored.
During the second week, people tend to loose a pound a week . At this time , carbohydrates can be added back slowly until you achieve your target weight.
The final phase of the diet is the moderate diet plan that you intend to keep. The goal of this phase is for you to feel that you are no longer dieting, instead you have changed your eating habits and the new regimen has become your way of life.
